The drawings include diagrams of carriages, engines. A really fascinating book for steam train fans. The author had a distinguished military career which spanned both World Wars. Fine.

The Severn Valley Steam Railway runs from Kidderminster in Worcestershire to Bridgnorth in Shropshire, with Arley being one of the rail stations along the way. Following the author's first visit to Arley in 1971, he with a small group of volunteers worked in restoring the derelict station, and for eight years he held the honorary post of station master at Arley. Arley has the oldest arboretum in the U.K. and well worth a visit. Fine.

The author as a lad joined the G.W.R. terminus of Neyland in Pembrokshire as a cleaner, and nearly fifty years later he retired as a British Rail express driver on the then newly-introduced diesels. He tells with humour about his working life with British Rail, and the many unforgettable characters he met, and of grimmer events - of the General Strike. of wartime work with ammunition trains and of the bombing of Swansea. Discover what went on 'Behind the Steam' in ferret-hunting, chapel-going, cockle-gathering, whist-drive playing and much more. An interesting read of a vanished way of life. Very Good/Good.
