 - ARCT, SQUADRON LEADER B  Prisoner of War. My Secret Journal. Stalag Luft I. Germany 1944-45
Oxford, U.K, Past Times. 1995, Reprint. Hard Cover. Ill.: By Author. 138pp, plus 36 pages not numbered. With numerous coloured drawings throughout the book by the author, plus some maps. The author was born in Poland. In 1940 he to England and trained as a fighter pilot. In 1943, with a group of Polish pilots, he volunteered to go to North Africa where he and the others fought alongside the British 145 Squadron. In 1944 he was promoted to Squadron Leader of 316 Squadron. In September of 1944, during a flight over Holland, his plane caught fire and he was forced to bale out. He was captured and taken to Stalag Luft I prisoner of war camp. It was during the seven months in this camp that he wrote what he called his ‘Log Book’ Prisoner of War. The journal was done by Arct purely to amuse his fellow inmates and to provide release and relaxation for himself. During his war service he received two important Polish decorations for bravery in the field, the Virtuti Militari and the Krzyz Walecznych, the latter four times. Fine.

Philip Bartlett's account of a pilot's life in the dawn of aerial warfare and, as history, of the first use of the bomber in war by the Navy's aircraft. He flew 101 missions, with attacks on the U-boat bases to bombing the German Gothas as they prepared to raid London, and then to the support of Haig's drive to the coast which ended in the mud at Passchendale. In March 1918 his squadron finds itself directly in the path of Ludendorff's massive thrust, which broke the British 5th Army and nearly decided the War. Attacked by Richthofen's aces, No. 5 Squadron RNAS flew continuous and desperate missions against the advancing troops . Fine/Fine.

The holds of the ship contained three million silver Saudi riyals worth 80 million dollars and over 30 million dollars in silver bullion. The 7200-ton ship broke into two pieces and sank to a depth of one and a half miles. A team led by Jean Roux recovered the treasure. It is a story of politics and intrigue between governments during World War II. The story of the John Barry is recreated with the help of living survivors, including one of the German U-boat officers. Very Good/Very Good.

These reminiscences were written for the first issues of the Army Service Corps Journal in 1891, and provide an insight into some seldom recorded aspects of the campaigns in South Africa.
