  Eltinge Theatre Program
New York, A.h. Woods. 1921, Original Program. Small Paper, The theatre was designed by Thomas W. Lamb and built by Al Woods and named for the female impersonator Julian Eltinge whose career made Woods' fortune. Woods introduced a new seating system: "slender," "medium," and "stout" seats for patrons of all sizes. Woods lost the theatre in the depression and it became a burlesque house. By 1941, it was a movie house. In 1998, redevelopment of 42nd St. in full swing, the whole building was lifted, moved down the block, and transformed into the facade and entrance of the AMC multiplex cinema. The play "The Demi-Virgin" was a farcial romance set in Hollywood and was written by Avery Hopwood who wrote several plays including The Bat and The Gold Diggers. The cast included Charles Ruggles and Glenn Anders. Anders is probably best known for his creepy performance in "The Lady From Shanghai" and of course Charles Ruggles had a long and varied career in films. The 28pg. program has a lovely full color cover featuring a young woman and is illustrated with many nice ads. Light hardly visible fold, otherwise vg.
