| ANDERSON, JAYNE.: Tiepolos Cleopatra. Melbourne, 2006. Professor Jaynie Anderson is an internationally recognised scholar, renowned for her research and publications on the Italian masters. On this occasion she has concentrated on one painting, the National Gallery of Victorias famous Banquet of Antony and Cleopatra by Giambattista Tiepolo. This glorious work of art, considered a centre-piece of the collection has recently undergone restoration in preparation for the re-opening of the National Gallery on St. Kilda Road in December 2003. Jaynie Anderson has collected together a previously under-examined range of Tiepolos drawings and studies - and other versions of the theme by Tiepolo and other Italian artists. She has woven them into the spectacular history of the painting, its production and its various owners prior to coming to Australia (including the Hermitage in St. Petersburg) - not to mention the fascinating stories of Antony and Cleopatra and their suicides, which the author has researched and retells in great detail and considerable passion. The book concludes with a chapter written by the National Gallery of Victorias conservators, John Payne and Carl Villis. 224p, b/w and col illus t/out. Cloth. | AVERY, CHARLES.: David Le Marchand 1674-1726. "An Ingenious Man for Carving Ivory". Lund Humphries, London, 1996. 28cm. 96pp, 166 ills (8 col). David Le Marchand was an expert ivory carver and executed some of the most impressive cameo portraits ever carved in ivory. This is the first book on his work, and was published to accompany a major touring exhibition. Le Marchand learned his craft in his native Dieppe, the port to which elephant tusks were shipped from West Africa. However, as a Huguenot he was forced in 1685 to flee religious persecution in France, and settled in Edinburgh in 1696. Here he secured the patronage of some leading Scottish families, including the Earl of Cromartie and the Duke of Perth, for whom he was to undertake important portrait commissions. Wrappers. New. | BAMBACH, CARMEN C., HUGO CHAPMAN, MARTIN CLAYTON AND GEORGE R. GOLDNER: Correggio and Parmigianino. Master Draughtsmen of the Renaissance. London, 2000. 192pp. 150 colour and 40 b/w ills. 28cm. Since Vasari, the artists of the Italian Renaissance have been characterized in superhuman terms, suggesting that they were responsible both for the conceptualization, as well as demanding execution of the creative output. In Drawing and Painting in the Italian Renaissance Workshop, Carmen Bambach reassesses the role of artists and their assistants in the creation of monumental painting. Analyzing representative wall paintings and the many drawings related to the various stages of their production, Bambach convincingly reconstructs the development of workshop practice and design theory in the early modern period. She establishes that between 1430 and 1600, cartoons - drawings ostensibly of a utilitarian nature - became common practice, and, moreover, moved to the forefront of artistic expression. Her exhaustive analysis of archaeological evidence as well as textual evidence provides a timely and much-needed re-assessment of the working methods of artists in one of the most vital periods in the history of art.
