| CARBONI, S.: Glass of the Sultans, London, 2001. 31cm. 356pp, 265 ills (165 col). Islamic glassmakers were not only brilliant technicians and innovators in their own right, but they also preserved many of the methods of Late Antique Roman craftsmen, passing them on centuries later to Venetian and other European masters. This lovely book is the first comprehensive study of the accomplishments of these artisans. The volume presents glass objects from collections throughout the world—from perfume flasks to pitchers, mosque lanterns to boxes, inkwells to vases—ranging from the seventh to the nineteenth century and through many of the major artistic centers of the Muslim world.Five introductory essays cover all facets of the subject, including historical background, archaeological excavations, issues of connoisseurship, technology, and science. The authors then discuss 150 masterworks of Islamic glass, grouped by technique or type of decoration (blown, mold-blown, hot-worked, mosaic, painted, cut, and engraved), each of which is illustrated in full color. Examples of European glass objects are also included as illuminating reference points. The book is the catalogue of an exhibition that opens at the Corning Museum of Glass in May 2001 and at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in October 2001.Stefano Carboni is associate curator in the department of Islamic art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. David Whitehouse is executive director of the Corning Museum of Glass. Robert Brill is the research scientist at Corning, and William Gudenrath is the resident adviser there.Cloth. D/j. NEW. | ELGOOD, ROBERT.: The Arms and Armour of Arabia in the 18th-19th and 20th Centuries. London, 1994 148pp, 100 b/w & 24 col ills. In the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Arab nomads who inhabited a great stretch of the Near East from Aleppo in northern Syria to the southern shores of the Arabian peninsula continued a way of life virtually unchanged from the time of the Prophet Muhammad in the seventh century. Wars and raids were carried out by tribesmen armed like their ancestors with sword, mace and lance. Firearms came slowly to the Bedouin, and multishot weapons were very rare until the end of the nineteenth century. This book examines surviving weapons, identifying new centres of manufacture and questions the origin of 'Damascus' swords. Arms exported to the Near East from India, Iran, the Caucasus and Europe are discussed. So too are tribal customs relating to warfare, weapons and their usage with eye witnesses' accounts. The Arms and Armour of Arabia is richly illustrated, in colour and black and white, with magnificent examples of the armourer's art; it provides much new information and a new perspective on Islamic arms in a readable form which will appeal equally to the scholar, the collector and the general reader. | GRUBE, ERNST.: Studies in Islamic Painting. London, 1995. 547pp. 438 ills. Ernst Grube's research on Islamic painting over more than three decades has dealt with materials, issues and problems ranging from 10th-century Egypt through Ottoman Turkey to 19th-century Persia. The studies collected in this volume represent the breadth of his scholarship: they collect and lay new materials before the reader, isolate and define schools of painting as thinking about them coalesces, and propose new interpretations of materials already well-known to scholars and students. Most of these studies are reprinted without major alterations, but additional notes at the end make some essential readjustments. Article 5, a study of a drawing on a so-called 'Fustat-Fragment', possibly of 9th-century date, has 50 pages of illustrations of such fragments, not included in the original article and most of them not published before. Professor Grube brings the methodological approach of a Western Medievalist to the study of a primary form of Islamic art. These articles are all essential reading for anyone interested in painting as a major form of art not only in the lands where Islam held sway but also in Late Classical Antiquity, Medieval Europe and Byzantium. | JAMES, DAVID.: The Master Scribes. Qur'ans of the 11th to 14th Centuries. The Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art. Oxford, 1992. 33cm. 240pp, 126 colour plates. The Khalili Collection is the greatest collection of Islamic art in private hands; it is continuing to grow and improve. It contains a large and comprehensive range of Qur'anic material, covering the entire history of Qur'an production from the seventh to the twentieth century, including examples from centres as far apart as Spain and India. This is the second of four volumes cataloguing the Qur'ans in the Khalili Collection. Notable among the manuscripts in this volume is a Qur'an by the greatest calligrapher of the Middle Ages, Yaqut al-Musta`simi, which is exceptional in that it retains its original illumination. Other masterpieces include a Qur'an written in gold from twelfth-century Iraq ; the only twelfth-century Qur'an from Valencia still in private hands, and a manuscript that is possibly the earliest Qur'an to survive from India. The lavish presentation of this catalogue is combined with detailed scholarship that not only encompasses the history of the subject, but also presents in accompanying essays new findings that have been made in the course of cataloguing. The text is supported by notes, up-to-date bibliography, and index, while inscriptions are reproduced in their original languages, with English translations. Dr James is an internationally renowned authority on Arab and Persian manuscripts, and on Qur'ans in particular. Cloth. NEW.
