| AMES, VAN METER Out of Iowa - a Poem By Van Meter Ames - Signed By the Author, to Author Carl Grabo New York: Henry Harrison Pub, 1936. First Edition. Hard Cover in Dust Jacket. Signed by Author 1936 First Edition HARDCOVER in DJ ... Signed by author Van Meter Ames , to author Carl Grabo, dated 1936, and mentioning fellow professor and author R.C. Stephenson ... Robert Clarence Stephenson, ' lover of letters ' , to whom this book is dedicated .... *** .... This is the only poetry book by Van Meter Ames, who wrote many philosophical books and papers ... Ames says in the preface : " He who theroizes about art should expose himself in turn to the analysis of others ; if he cannot dance or paint, he can write; if he has no other subject he has himself. I have tried expressing my sense of beauty ... in the ... litany of little things remembered from childhood ... Words sing with their own music .... " ... Born July 9, 1898 in De Soto, Iowa, Ames was the son of Mabel Van Meter Ames and Edward Scribner Ames ( 1870-1958 ) , who taught in the Philosophy department at the University of Chicago ... Van Meter Ames received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1924, and Ames joined the faculty of the University of Cincinnati in 1925 , where he became chairman of the department of philosophy in 1959 ... After a long and distinguished career ... during which he received a Rockefeller grant to study French philosophy in 1948, was named Fulbright research professor at Komazawa University in Tokyo, and had interim appointments at Cornell University ... the University of Texas ... the University of Hawaii ... New York's Columbia University ... and the University of Aix-Marseille where he was the first American faculty member ... Ames retired in 1966 ... and then was designated Humanist Fellow for Outstanding Contributions to Humanist Thought in Ethics and Aesthetics, by the American Humanist Association, in 1976 ... His papers are held at the University of Chicago archives, and have been published by the American Philosophical Association ... This is a lovely, long, stream of consciousness poem to the memory of turn-of-the-century and early 20th century Prohibition-era Iowa , and those dreamy days of milkmen making the rounds with their horses at dawn, and the ice man delivering his wares, and girls in dresses that they had made themselves, out walking on a sunny afternoon with boys they loved ... Beautiful, evocative imagery, brings back memories of town life everywhere in America in some ... and, for others, evokes nostalgia for a time they never knew ... " We picked our way through the ruins of a shingle factory, the largest in the world when virgin forest was uncut; We skirted the foundations of a deserted brickyard, and a canning factory on the edge of failure, before we reached the leaning ice house, where a bearded ice man delved in the smell of sawdust; When it was late ... going home between rows of once-saloons and little shops doing summer business, past the empty exclamation of a castle; battlement for a grand hotel, but never finished; on down the quiet street of tiny houses and large trees; In a red-trimmed dress of tan percale she made herself, to my delight, Isabel walked with me ... Isabel wore overalls of blue and red, when we walked through morning woods and arrived too early for the mail; where residents of the Civil War, in black felt hats and square white beards, rehearsed with canes and maps imagined on the walk, campaigns of 1863 and '64 " ... Touching, beautiful memoir ... " Out of Iowa - A Poem " ... by Van Meter Ames ... published by Henry Harrison poetry publisher, New York ... 1936 ... First Edition Hardcover in Dustjacket ... Ambrose Bierce was "an adroit writer of satirical verses savaging 'railrogues,' hypocritical priests and patriots, devious lawyers, and crooked politicians ... Ms. Grenander is reasonable in requesting that Bierce be remembered for more than that invaluable work, The Devils Dictionary" - Atlantic Monthly ... Author of macabre short stories, the classic "Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," and The Devil's Dictionary, Ambrose Bierce was also a poet ... The American writer who disappeared into the wilds of Mexico in 1913 is here restored to full voice ... This volume contains a generous selection of Bierce's poems; they are alternately ironic, melancholy, bitter, and wickedly amusing ... There are also 15 essays and letters on poetry, poets, and such topics as "Wit and Humour" and "The Passing of Satire" ... Few authors have been more intimately familiar with wit and satire then the brilliant, iconoclastic Bierce ... As editor M.E. The poineer history of Oregon and Washinton comes alive in this beautifully written book by novelist and poet Jana Harris ... She animates her compelling story with the richness of the event, the intimate rhythms of everyday life, and the unforgettable voices of her characters ... Spanning the years 1853 - 1933 , a time that begins with the ox cart and ends with the airplane , this is the account of Helen Walsh and Thomas Hodgson , whose families confronted the Pacific Northwest , the modern states of Washington and Oregon, when it was still a rugged, difficult , and seemingly limitless wilderness ... Theirs is a story of marriage, family, friends ... and of dreams and disappointments, in the formidable task of settling the American West ... Through dramatic monologue and lucid verse, this book expresses the passionate human spirit evident in pioneering hardship and the satisfaction of having carved out a path to a sometimes pathless place ... Annie Dillard says of this book : " In these poems, Jana Harris has written an accurate and moving account of pioneer life a hundred years ago in Washington State. The varied voices of farmers, Indian women, miners, laundresses, and school teachers, tell their own harsh stories, unforgettably. " ... | KING, ALFRED CASTNER Passing of the Storm, the - and Other Poems, By Alfred Castner King New York / Toronto / London: Fleming H. Revell Pub, 1907. First Thus. Hard Cover. Photos. 5 x 7 - 3/4 " 1907 Hardcover ... Nice & clean - looks to be unread. Excellent Gift Giving quality. Silver gilt lettering impressed onto decorated boards. This is a beautiful volume, with a six glossy B&W photographs , circa early 1900s, including the 20" foldout panorama photograph intact. One photo depicts the cliff dwellings of the Pueblo Indians. Nature lover, Alfred Castner King was passionate about the old west, and the wilderness of the gold mining days, as well as deeply respectful of the prospectors who mined the gold rush times of the west - he was a man of the mountains, and loved the outdoors as much as Robert Service did. This book of his poetry, most of which was written after an accident left him blinded, is dedicated : " To a rapidly disappearing class, the pioneer prospectors, whose bravery, intelligence and industry blazed the trail in the western wilderness for advancing civilization, and made possible the development of the Great West ". The preface was written in Ouray, Colorado, in 1907, by King. He says in it that "the men who prospected the western mountain ranges for their gold wealth were the cream of American and European manhood... proof of this exists in the names which have lingered behind them, for it was the prospector who christened the mountains, gulches, and mining locations of the West " ... He said that , in 1907, when this book was compiled, you may still occasionally in the mountain districts of the west, see a veteran prospector of the old school, living like a hermit in his log cabin, in some picruresque park or gulch, near his sometimes valuable, sometimes useless, mining claim .. He said that " to your surprise you discover that he can converse entertainingly on any subject ... you may find him to be a Shakespearean scholar ; able to translate Homer or Virgil; the masterpieces of literature are as familiar to him as his own cabin walls" . The six page preface is charming and encapsulates a time gone by in the American west. The poetry is superb pioneer poems - The Passing of an Old Man's Life , The Storm, The Avalanche, The Story of an Exile, The Passing of the Storm, and more testify to the life of the frontier prospectors. " Just then a crashing sound was heard, that casused each ruddy cheek to blanch, Though no one moved or spoke a word, All listening to the avalanche, With apprehensive ears intent, Knew what a mountain snowslide meant, Nor marvel that each visage paled, Nor that the hardy sinews quailed; These terrors of the solitude The mountain's timbered slopes denude, Sweeping the frozen spruce and fir, As with a snowy scimitar " ... After the avalanche had subsided, the characters resumed their ordinary activities, as King writes so clearly in his poems : " As one of the disasters of defeat, Washing the dishes fell to Russian Pete. A game of freeze-out, played with equal zeal, Decided who should cook the evening meal; Conspiring cards electing Uncle Jim, The culinary task devolved on him. " Clear and crsip as a wilderness mountain morn, the poetry of King is right up there with Service, in giving a true picture of pioneer life - a way of life which had all but disappeared shortly after the turn of the 20th century. Jacket protected in New non-stick clear Mylar Sleeve ... 320 pages poetry with 22 pages text + 5 pages text by W.H.Auden on the first edition of Kirstein's 'Poems of a Pfc', in 1964 ... Lincoln Kirstein , artist & General Director of the New York City Ballet, President of the American School of Ballet, founded the literary journal Hound & Horn, while at Harvard, and subsequently Dance Index.... He founded the precursors of the NYC Ballet, with George Balanchine, in 1934... Here, in one volume, are his poems.... including an entirely new book, Poems of a Patriot, 1955-1985 Ballads Urban and Suburban, in addition to the whole text of his earlier book, Rhymes of a Pfc, first published in 1964.... W.H.Auden says: "I should guess Browning,Hardy and Kipling... to be... his literary influences ....(no) poet.. will read these poems without admiration....his complicated stanzas...he...handles with great ease.... Rhymes of a Pfc....as a picture of the late war...is the most convincing, moving, and impressive book I have come across..." Kirstein had been one of the " Monuments Men " during WWII, one of the group of artists curators and scholars attached to various Allied Army units, as part of the Monuments, Fine Arts & Archives recovery effort, under Dwight D. Eisenhower, in the closing days of the Second World War, all across Europe, in a valiant effort to locate and preserve the artwork and other national treasures which had been looted by the Nazis ... Woefully understaffed, their work was unprecedented, and they had to rely on their wits and ingenuity, to try, for the first time in history, to simultaneously save an occupied country's treasures while still fighting a war ... Known affectionately as " Venus " soldiers, after their famed charge, the Venus de Milo , they couldn't recover everything, but, often entering the liberated territories just as the Nazi's were fleeing, even ahead of Allied ground troops, the Venus men were extraordinarily successful in saving the many paintings and statues and other works of art, given the resources they had available ... Called the 'greatest treasure hunt in history' , enormous hiding places and vast storehouses in which the Nazis had squirreled away plundered priceless paintings & antiquities, plus Jewish sacred objects, and objects from Masonic temples, and private collections of art & antiques, were uncovered and saved and returned by the Monuments Men Lincoln & his colleagues, most formerly affiliated with Museums, and sent onto the front lines to move with the combat troops ... Despite the modest title of the early poems herein, Kirstein was a war hero, albeit of a different stripe; he and his small handful of colleagues earned the gratitude of the entire world when their work finally came to light ... Gift Giving quality ... 64 pages ... illustrated with photographs by Virginia Schendler ... ' In combining their work, poet James Laughlin and photographer Virginia Schendler explore independent but complementary ways of seeing ... The poems are not meant as captions for the photographs, nor do the "found" images ... gathered in Manhattan's SoHo and TriBeCa neighborhoods ... function as illustrations to the poems ... But taken together, they reinforce common themes .... the urgencies of time and desire ... the dreamlike qualities of ordinary experience ... Schendler's photos address the illusive nature of a changing city of New York ... while Laughlin's poems, with their colloquial yet eloquent tone, follow the rhythms of the streets ... Playful as well as profound, this collaboration will prompt new associations in the imagination of its audience ... James Laughlin, since 1936 the publisher of New Directions books, is also a noted poet. In his lyrics and in his love poems he blends the spirit of the Latin poets with his own keen ear for the subtleties of colloquial speech ... Beneath the wit of this poetry there are pungent truths about the human condition. His Collected Poems were published in 1994 by Moyer Bell.... Virginia Schendler has photographed inner-city school children, and has made portraits of writers and artists. In the semi-abstract color photographs of this lovely book, she has sought to capture some of New York's own expression: the ironies and the humor, the complex and less-familiar provocations of older parts of the city...
