BUSCH, AKIKO  Photography of Architecture, the - Twelve Views
New York: Van Nostrand Reinhold Pub, 1993. 1993 Printing. Soft Cover. Photos. 8-1/2 x 11x 3/4 " 0442013493 1993 Softcover . Brand new from publisher ... Never opened , Never owned , Never marked ... Gift Giving quality ... Big handsome book, 8-1/2 x 11" size, weighing 2 pounds ... 233 pages with index. illustrated with B&W photographs. As architecture gains widening public interest, the role of the architectural photographer in shaping our impressions of the built world is evolving. The architectural photographer is in a position of undeniable responsibility, for it is often through his or her eyes that critics and the public alike are exposed to much of the built environment. Documenting the course of architecture is a matter not only of relaying information, but of clarifying its less obvious tenets, evoking subtle philosophies, and observing its often grand aspirations. Ezra Stoller's widly published photographs, for instance, not only made the public familiar with architecture of the modern movement, but suggested ways in which these buildings might be observed and appreciated. Akiko Busch therefore carefully considers the effects photography has on architecture and how these effects are realized - the manner in which a building has been framed by the camera. With an introduction that touches on the history of architectural photography, the book examines the development of the profession and its growing influence on our perceptions of architecture. 'The Photography of Architecture' includes spectacular black-and-white photographs accompanying interviews with twelve leading architectural photographs, and it provides documentation of some of this century's finest architectural achievement. Those who established the profession in the 1930s - Ezra Stoller, Julius Shulman, Bill Hedrich - discuss philosophies, approaches, and backgrounds. Interviews with younger photographers expore the debt owed to their predecessors as well as their unique contributions. The photographers whose works are featured and discussed: Ezra Stoller, Wolfgang Hoyt, Peter Aaron, Norman McGrath, Steve Rosenthal, Julius Shulman, Bill Hedrich, Nick Merrick, Robert Perron, Tim Street-Porter, Paul Warchol, Judith Turner, " The Photography of Architecture : Twelve Views" published by Van Nostrand Reinhold, New York, 1993 Softcover ***. Walk on the Wild Side is a fitting description of this collection of provocative photographs of cross-dressers, drag artists & transsexuals, trannys, by London photograher, Jeanette Jones ... Here is a look into a world far removed from ordinary life ... It is a world where some of the most beautiful women are men ... and they wear an extravagant collection of outfits ... as they dress up, parade & live out their fantasies .... When ' Amber Rose ' introduced Jones to London's Madame Jo - Jo 's ... the legendary drag nightclub ... she quickly won the trust of the regulars .... She photographed the Barbettes, the nightclub's ' Girls ' - a first in photographic history ... Jones describes how she was educated into this lifestyle ... "Ambrose ( ' Amber Rose ' ) explained the meaning of the different sides of drag ... Cross-dressers aren't necessarily gay - women wear trousers, so why can't men wear skirts? .... Transvestites like wearing women's clothes for sexual pleasure .... Transsexuals are men who have had sex-change surgery, and lead lives as women - or vice versa." ... Jones has become trusted & respected among transsexuals & cross-dressers ... and they have taken her into their confidence ... In her role as reportage photographer, she carries her camera to record all the main drag events .... Jones took the London art scene by storm when her photographs were exhibited at the elegant Freud's gallery ... Since then, she has travelled the world producing the stunning images displayed in this book ... and collecting material for 2 more exhibitions ... one in the Kings Road, London, and the other in South Beach, Miami .... Her portraits of transsexuals are particularly touching ... revealing as they do the reality behind the fantasy of drag ... Jeanette Jones was once just an average housewife who took evening classes to learn how to take pictures .... That was before she discovered, and was discovered by, the world of drag artists ... Her fascination stems from the day she attended a party with her husband & was asked by a man if he could try on her jacket .... Now her talents are constantly in demand as a portrait, reportage and advertising photographer ... This book is a collection of some of her astonishing work, complex, fascinating, sometimes sad, and eerily beautiful .. " Walk on the Wild Side " ... by Jeanette Jones ... published by Barricade Books, New York ... 1995 First Edition Hardcover in Dustjacket ... Still Sealed ***. New/New .

Excellent Gift Giving quality. Never opened, Never owned, Never marked . Still Sealed in Original Publisher's Shrinkwrap. This is a big beautiful book, nearly 9 x 11" size, weighing over 2 pounds ... Catalogue for an exhibition which was held at the Kunsthalle, Vienna ( June 18 - October 10, 1999 ). 160 pages, illustrated with 150 duotone photos. Texts by Arthur Miller, Inge Morath, Rolf Sachsse, Olivia Lahs-Gonzales, Gerald Matt, Sabine Folie. An overview of Morath's photographs including many previously unpublished.. Inge Morath was born in Graz, Austria. Her parents were scientists and took her along on their many European assignments. Morath studied languages in Berlin, and after the Second World War she became a translator, then a journalist and the Austrian editor for Heute, an Information Service Branch publication based in Munich. For the remainder of her life Morath would remain a prolific diary and letter-writer, retaining a dual gift for words and pictures that made her unusual among her colleagues. A friend of photographer Ernst Haas, Morath wrote articles to accompany his photographs. Together, they were invited to Paris by Robert Capa to join the newly-founded Magnum agency, where she worked as an editor. Morath began photographing in 1951, and assisted Henri Cartier-Bresson as a researcher in 1953 - 54. She became a member of Magnum in 1955. In the following years, Morath traveled extensively in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Her special interest in the arts found expression through photographic essays published by a number of leading magazines. After her marriage to Arthur Miller in 1962, Morath settled in New York and Connecticut. She made her first trip to the USSR in 1965, and in 1978, after studying Mandarin for five years, she made the first of many trips to the People's Republic of China together with Miller. In the 1980s and '90s, Inge Morath continued to pursue both assignments and independent projects. She won numerous awards, including being presented with a Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Connecticut, the Austrian State Prize for Photography, the Gold medal of the National Art Club, and the Medal of Honor in Gold of the City of Vienna. Some of Morath’s greatest achievements are in portraiture, posed images of celebrities as well as fleeting images of anonymous passersby. Another gift is her feeling for places: her pictures of Boris Pasternak's home, Pushkin's library, Chekhov's house, Mao Tse Tung's bedroom, as well as artists' studios and cemetery memorials, are permeated with the spirit of invisible people still present. Intimate, fascinating, always varied, highly original ... here is a sidewalk portarit of New York in its glamour, pretension, toughness, grandeur & fun .... Here is a sense of place expressed through a personal vision, in brilliant colors that occur where least expected, & with the spark of juxtapositions that become apparent only when caught by the camera's shutter in time .... Robert Walker's photographs are vibrant, like sculptures, as though his shapes were weights in delicate balance .... They are rich, like paintings, as though his film were a palette knife that sliced through a moment on a New York street & laid out the colors like fruit upon a breakfast table in the sun .... His subject is the cavalcade, the human comedy .... His method is the shuffle of intersections between the inner reality of latent expectation & the outer reality of haphazard experience ..... William S. Burroughs reflects on the use of similar approaches in writing & on their value in teaching a method of perception .... He discusses photography as a medium, relating his own 'cut-up' technique of writing to the characteristics of street photography, and contrasting both with representational painting & linear writing ... He then looks back upon his own lifetime's experience of New York, and hints at what Walker's pictures may really tell us about life in the city in the 1980s .... Robert Walker is one of the most dynamic photographers ..... After studying painting in Montreal, he moved to New York City in 1978, & has spent years photographing life on the city streets & became well known on both sides of the Atlantic ... He exhibited in New York, Paris & London .... His images have been bought for the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Biblotheque Nationale in Paris .... This is his first full- length book .... William S. Burroughs was world famous as one of the most innovative & influential writers of the 20th century ... One of the original Beat writers, he was the author of Junky, Naked Lunch, The Ticket That Exploded, The Soft Machine, Nova Express, The Wild Boys, Exterminator!, The Last Words of Dutch Schultz, The Third Mind, Cities of the Red Night & The Place of Dead Roads, and is the subject of a film, Burroughs, by Howard Brookner ... His introduction to 'his' city is fascinating ... " New York Inside Out " ... by Robert Walker ... with introduction by William S. Burroughs ... 1984 Hardcover in Dustjacket First Edition ... published by Skyline Oxford University Press, Toronto ... ***. New/New .
