ALEXANDER, PAUL / REF: ANDY WARHOL  Rise of the Warhol Empire and the Race for Andy's Millions , the - Death and Disaster
New York: Random House Villard, 1994. First Edition, 2nd Printing. Hard Cover in Dust Jacket. Photos. 6-1/4 x 9-1/2 x 1 " 0679432736 1994 Hardcover in DJ ... 1st Edn , 2nd printing ... Brand new from publisher ... last one ... Never opened, Never owned, Never marked ... Jacket protected in New, non-stick clear mylar sleeve ... very small scrumple one corner, not visible inside jacket ... Excellent Gift Giving quality ... This is a handsome book ... black quarter cloth over black boards, with Gold gilt title impressed on spine, in color artwork jacket ... 258 pages , illustrated with 18 pages B&W glossy photographs of Andy, some of his artwork, and the inside of his townhouse, and some people from his life, including Tom Wolfe, as well as photos of the trial to determine the value of the estate after his untimely death ... You can't take it with you ... Trouble is, he wasn't planning on going ... at least not then ... The sudden shocking death of the late great American artist Andy Warhol took the art world by surprise ... and must have been a heck of a shock to him as well ... Even though he always had a deep distrust of hospitals , he didn't expect to be actually killed outright by one through sheer stupidity ... " Dead means a lot of money, honey " , Warhold once said ... And he was right ... After his death , the story of shameless greed, dastardly deeds, brilliant investments, tainted alliances, stolen treasures, power plays, and the many different types of love, as well as lust for money, which played out , would have topped even the ironic wit of Andy himself ... Almost the moment of his death in 1987, less than 24 hours after being admitted for a routine and minor operation ... an executor took charge, lawyers were called in , Andy's townhouse, stuffed to the rafters with antiques, collectables, paintings, bric-a-brac and just plain junk, was sealed ... Security guards were posted at the Factory ... but ... not before Warhol paintings were moved to secret warehouses ... some of those paintings never to be seen again ... The private world that Andy had so carefully constructed and kept hidden for more than 30 years was about to go public in a big way ... A brilliant collector, compulsive shopper, and compulsive painter, Andy left vast holdings of antique furniture and jewellry, as well as some museum quality artifacts, and contemporary art by many other artists; as well as a profitable magazine, his New York properties, and , most valuable of all ... his own unsold work ... in numbers so large, it would take months to even appraise it ... In their early moments of shock, his associates set the value of his estate at only between 10 and 15 million dollars... Seven years later, with the estate still not closed, some claimed it was worth $220 million ... some said as much as 4 times that ... Who was right , and who was wrong, and who was crooked, and who was just plain dumb ? ... It took a court case to sort it all out ... and when the dust settled, the judge in New York, in 1994, had to assess the value ... Shortly after his death in the late 80s, as directed in his will, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts was created - it was a non-profit organization to give out grants ... By 1990, however the foundation and the estate that created it would be at war ... along with the laywer who at one time represented both entities ... The battle raged in court, and in the newspapers and magazines and on the television news ... When the case was finally ended, the estate value was set in the court at more than 500 million dollars ... As Andy might have said ... " great " ( no exclamation mark ) ... But the process it took to get there was anything but great - it was both comic and tragic, and ultimately absurd ... This is the true story of what went on with the Warhol estate ... what there was, who got what and what went where ... Absolutely fascinating ... Author Paul Alexander has written for the New York Times Magazine, ARTnews, The Village Voice , and others, and is the author of Rough Magic, the biography of Sylvia Plath, as well as Boulevard of Broken Dreams, the biography of James Dean ... He lives in Manhattan ... " Death and Disaster - The Rise of the Warhol Empire and the Race for Andy's Millions " ... by Paul Alexander ... published by Random House Villard , New York ... 1994 Hardcover in Dustjacket ***. O'BRIAN, JOHN / REF: HENRI MATISSE  Ruthless Hedonism - the American Perception of Henri Matisse . . . Illustrated
Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1999. First Edition. Hard Cover in Dust Jacket. Photos Throughout. 7 x 10 x 1 " 0226616266 Hardcover in DJ 1st ... Brand new from publisher ... Never opened , Never owned , Never marked ... Jacket protected in New, clear non-stick Mylar Sleeve ... Excellent Gift Giving quality ... This is a big beautiful book, 7 x 10 " ... 284 pages ... illustrated with B&W and color photos throughout ... Diane Dillon of Northwestern University says of this book : " In this important study ... John O'Brian charts Henri Matisse 's evolving reputation among an impressively broad range of audiences ... including journalists ... art dealers ... collectors ... museum curators and directors, and critics ... Especially compelling is O'Brian's nuanced treatment of his subject ... the way he has patiently teased out the compexities of Matisse's ever-shifting position among interpretive communities ... Through careful research ... O'Brian mobilizes a wealth of primary sources ... letters and other personal papers, newspaper accounts, and documents from institutional archives ... in support of his arguments, solidly grounding all of his individual points in historical documentation ... Particularly impressive is the way O'Brian is able to integrate the history of individual objects by Matisse ... with larger institutional histories and trends." ... ' Moving from the late 1920s, when Matisse's output was shedding its outlaw reputation, to the early 1950s, when his work was canonized, O'Brian shows how the way Matisse's work was viewed changed as attention shifted away from the seductiveness of his subject matter to the seductiveness of his paint. The art's resolute rejection of political concerns, its deployment of decorative design for visual satisfaction, and its representations of pleasure encouraged American audiences, who in the 1930s deemed the art disreputable, to celebrate its gratifications by the early years of the Cold War. This intriguing, wide-ranging investigation of Matisse's self-promotion, America's uneasy embrace of modernism, and America's consumer culture and politics provides a rich context to Clement Greenberg's words published in the Nation in 1947: "Matisse's cold hedonism and ruthless exclusion of everything but the concrete, immediate sensation will in the future, once we are away from the present Zeitgeist, be better understood as the most profound mood of the first half of the twentieth century.' ... Throughout, the interviews illustrate the development of Jones's career, including shifts that came after the Warner Brothers animation unit closed in the early 1960s ... from the uncertain years of American animation during that decade and the 1970s ... through the "rediscovery" of Jones and Hollywood studio animation during the 1980s and 90s ... Jones candidly discusses his aesthetic sensibilities, providing tips for aspiring animators and describing Warner Bros. animation in its heyday ... Jones was an art college graduate who struggled through the Depression, trying to establish himself within the Hollywood industry. In these conversations he emerges as a witty raconteur and a well-read, inspiring advocate for animation art, intent on nurturing future generations of animators ...
