By the age of eleven and in public school he earned money selling newspapers. In 1904 became a war correspondent for the Hearst papers during the Russian-Japanese war. Joined the Socialist Party and became a Revolutionist. His various jobs and travels around the world gave him insight into some of the characters for his numerous books. Resigned from the Socialist Party in 1916 because of its lack of "fire and fight".
