Original photograph (5 x 8 1/4 inch) with trimmed corners and lower left corner bent and evidence of having been glued in a frame. Subject's name in pencil written on the back. Louis Philippe Albert d'Orleans (Comte de Paris) (1838-1894) claimant of the French throne became heir apparent to the French throne on the death of his father in 1842. Educated in England after the overthrow of his grandfather in 1848, Louise Philippe. During the Amerivcan Civil War he served on the staff of General George B. McClellan for a short while in 1862, before returning to France. In 1883 after the death of Henri, Comte de Chambord, grandson of Charles X, he was recognized as the head of the royal house of France, uniting the claims of the older and younger line of the house of Bourbon. He recieved the formal surrender of the arms and colors from the Confederate army for Grant at Lee's surrender. Returned to teaching after the war and served in the state militia. Very Good. Joined the Vermont Volunteers as a private, rising rapidly to a colonel in 1863 serving in the Pennsular campaigns, in the Carolinas, and back to Virginia and as General took over command of Richmond and re-establish order which he did to much admiration and note. Became a banker in Vermont after the war, and built the Holland House in New York City. Very Good. He served as an ordnance officer raising up the ranks and recieving field promotions along with the Medal of Honor at the battle of Chickamauga. Served as aide-de-camp under General Grant and was a close friend. Porter was a noted eloquent speaker and after Grant left the Presidencey went to work with the Pullman Car Company and other railway firms. He was instramental in bring back from France John Paul Jones' body. Very Good. Joined the Navy in 1821, involved as a commander in the Mexican-American war commanding ships on the West Coast including the 'Cyane'. During the Civil War he was involved in the attack on Port Royal, S.C. which he lead. Retired in 1863. Very Good. | Steel Engraving Portrait. "John A Logan" . Engraving from a photograph, circa 1880s (4 5 3/4 inch) of John A. Logan (1826-1886) from Kentucky/Illinois in civilian clothing. Joined the Union forces at Bull Run and then organized the 31st Illinois infantry and became its colonel. After suffering serious wounds in the end of 1861 he returned to the field and was made a brigadier-general of volunteers by Grant. Served under Grant in the Mississippi campaign, first to enter Vicksburg. In 1864 served as one of Sherman's generals in his march to Geogia and is said to have saved the battle at Atlanta. Commanded the Army of Tennessee after Gen. McPherson's death and was present at the taking of Savanah. After the war he returned to congress and was one of the managers of Johnson's impeachment. In 1871 became a senator from Illinois. Famous for many speeches given in the House and Senate. He published THE GREAT CONSPIRACY (1886) about the Civil War. A lawyer who helped organize the 17th Michigan Regiment and served in the civil war fighting at Antietam, Fredericksbury, Vicksburg, Knoxville among others. Went into politics and worked for the Republican Party serving in congress and later national politics. Very Good. He was on the staff of General Saunders. After the war he became a corporate lawyer and general councel, mainly with railroads in the Chicago area. Very Good. Lincoln joined the war in 1862, after graduating from Amherst College, with the Massachusetts Volunteers rising to captain in several months. He fought at Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, and the assault on Petersburg. By 1864 he reached the rank of brevetted lieutenant-colonel for meritorious services. After the war he returned to college and became a doctor after graduating from Harvard in 1868. He became a famous doctor specializing in diseases of the throat, lungs, and nose. Very Good.
