| Collection of Letters and Documents Relating to The Bronzing of the Lafayette Statue in Harford Connecticut . 1931-32. 57 letters and 10 documents. 97 total pages. Hartford, Connecticut. In 1907, the sculptor Paul W. Bartlett (b. 1865--d. 1925) created a life-size equestrian statue of General Lafayette. A bronze of the plaster cast statue was made and erected in Paris. In 1909, Bartlett donated the plaster cast to his native state of Connecticut. In 1914 the plaster cast statue was assembled and then placed in the State Capitol Building in Hartford. In 1930 a Mrs. Storrs donated $100,00 to have the statue cast in bronze and placed outside the State Capitol. She apparently selected the Roman Bronze Works of Corona, New York to do the bronze of the statue. This company, headed by Riccardo Bartelli, was considered among the premiere fine arts foundries in America. The bronze work was done in 1932 and the statue was placed at the corner of Capitol and Washington in Hartford, where it still stands today. This collection of letters and documents shows the political, legal and financial work that was done to bring the project to the point where the actual bronze work could be done. the project was shepherded by Arthur L. Shipman, chairman of the State Commission on Statues, and Bernard Kosicki of the State Arrorney General's Office. An early problem encountered is determining the copyright authority of Bartlett's widow Suzanne and how much controlo she should have over the artistic phase of the process. This resolved, the issue becomes executing various agreements. Bertelli pushes for actual work to begin so he does not have to lay off workers. The Attorney General Office's time in limited because of its work on the banking crisis then facing the nation. In March 1932 the necessary agreements are reached and work begins. The collection includes: Arthur L. Shipman. 25 letters (10 original, 15 carbon copies); Riccardo Bertelli. 6 original letters and 6 documents (original); Bernard Losicki. 6 letters (original); Warren B.
