Philadelphia: J B Lippincott 1937. Hardbound 8vo (8.25 inches tall) 260 pages. light gray endpapers. Description: Dust jacket art by [Richard] Floethe. This was the author's first novel, and was completed in 1928. The novel was based on the author's diary and was intended only for himself and a few friends. Shortly after finishing the book, Liepmann left Germany; in his absence a friend had the book published. When Liepmann discovered this, he asked the publisher to withdraw the book, but it had already become a great success. Since the day Hitler first came into power, Liepmann worked within Germany against Hitler. He was sent to a concentration camp and seriously injured by his beatings. He escaped and eventually reached France. At the time of the publication of this U.S. edition, he was still working against Hitler from his headquarters in London. An autobiographical novel based on the author's early years growing up in Germany during the privation years following World War I, and his experiences after voyaging as a stowaway to New York, working as a waiter in speakeasies, and then returning to Germany.
