 - NICHOLSON, LOREN.  Rails Across the Ranchos.
Fresno, California: Valley Publishers 1980. 1st Edition. Hardbound 4to (about 11 to 12.5 inches tall) 197 pages. Notes, index. Description: This copy is Inscribed and Signed by the author. Illustrated in b&w with historic photographs and other pictures. The history of San Luis Obispo County between 1885 and 1905 is the story of the slow transition from horse and buggy days to the mechanization of the new century. The events of those years were determined in great part by the coming of the railroad. Forty years passed from the time the short San Francisco and San Jose Railroad line was built in 1864 until the Southern Pacific Railroad provided a complete rail connection along the coast all the way to Los Angeles in 1904. As the 'coastal gap' was closed and the railroad line was built along the Cuesta and across the Santa Maria and Santa Ynez rivers, the face of the land began to change. The large ranches were subdivided and new communities were born. The people of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties worked hard to promote their area, to obtain rights of way for the railroad, and to encourage Southern Pacific officials to continue the line. Their efforts were met with a series of disappointing delays, but the first Southern Pacific train rolled into San Luis Obispo in May 5, 1894, and the years of waiting were over.
