| SCHWIEBERT, JR, ERNEST G. Matching the Hatch: A Practical Guide to Imitation of Insects Found on Eastern and Western Trout Waters. South Hackensack, New Jersey: Stoeger Publishing Company June, 1981. 2nd Printing, this edition. Trade size paperback 8vo (8.25 inches tall) 221 pages. Appendix, bibliography, index. Description: The illustrations by the author include four color plates. Region by region, season by season, Ernest Schwiebert takes you through the trouting year, showing exactly what insects emerge from what type of water and in what time of the month and the day. He describes minutely, in layman's terms, the structure and appearance of not only the adults, but the nymphal, larval or subimago (dun) forms as well. He signalizes the artificials that have proved most effective in his experience, gives their preferred dressings, and describes their use, with many illuminating incidents thrown in. In all, Schwiebert deals with 46 May flies, 19 stone flies, 20 caddises; and in addition, he covers a round handful of such less important forms as crane flies, dragonflies and damsel flies, fish flies, backswimmers and scuds. The basic data on these insects -- structure, water type frequented, season and hour of emergence, size and name of matching artificial -- are given in easy tabular form. Other tables show the recommended dressings of the artificials. This was originally published in hardcover by Macmillan in 1955; this is a second printing of the 1978 paperback edition.
