Description: Includes three maps and twenty-four b&w illustrations. In August of 1863 William Quantrill led 400 Confederate irregulars to a rise on the outskirts of Lawrence, Kansas. For two years, the inhabitants of this frontier community had managed to escape the effects of the Civil War. At Quantrill's command, the attack began at dawn; when it was over, 150 townsmen were dead and most of the settlement burned to the ground. The author considers why this remote settlement was singled out to receive such brutal treatment. He also describes the retribution that soon followed, which in many ways surpassed the Lawrence Massacre itself. The editor's preface reveals that Alfred Lacey Hough, a thirty-five year old commission merchant, entered the war as a sergeant of Pennsylvania Volunteers and came out of the conflict as a Brevet Lieutenant Colonel and saw more than the shot and shell side of the struggle. Hough was placed on occasional recruiting assignments, he served as a Commissary of Muster for the Army of the Cumberland, and was attached to the staff of General James S Negley and later that of General George H Thomas. Captain Hough took care to preserve for his descendants all of his experience and observations. His letters as a whole reveal his patriotic ideals, his development from a volunteer militia officer into a professional soldier, and show something of conditions on the home front.
