Lardner, Foster. (1873-1934). Actor and amateur magician. Member of the National Conjurers' Association Ring No. 2 in Rhode Island.
Autograph Note to His Daughter Signed by Actor and Magician Foster Lardner. Together with a Mailing Envelope.
West Barrington, RI: June 19, 1932. 1932. - 13 words filling half of a sheet of his personalized 7-1/4 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide letterhead with his Rhode Island address printed at the top. Signed "Daddy". The top right corner is creased. Folded 3 times for mailing. Together with his personalized mailing envelope addressed in his hand to "Sylvia Foster Lardner" but with no street address [the note probably accompanied a gift]. The envelope has been roughly opened down its left side. The letter is in very good condition. Foster Lardner writes to his daughter Sylvia Foster Lardner Page [1913-1997]: "With love from Mother & Daddy -- We are very proud of you Dear". An actor and amateur magician, Foster Lardner [1873-1934] was taught magic by Al Baker. For twenty years he was the head of the Keith organization in and around Providence, Rhode Island. He was also a member of the National Conjurers' Association Ring No. 2 in Rhode Island. He was manager of the Albee Theatre in Providence and stage manager for the SAM Carnival of Magic [1931] which featured Cardini, Jarrow and Hardeen. During World War I he gave frequent magical entertainments for soldiers in hospitals and later gave shows in the children's hospital in Providence. Very good .

1931. 1931. - Black-and-white publicity photo, 10 inches high by 8 inches wide. Inscribed by English at bottom right and signed "Ralph English". There are a few small creases to the emulsion & the corners are lightly bumped. Very good.

A full-length photo of Ralph English standing on a floor of ice with a satiny theatre curtain behind him. He is depicted smiling, wearing evening attire, a top hat and ice skates. He is leaning slightly backwards, his left arm supporting his back, his other arm held aloft with three juggling pins gripped in the fingers of his right hand. The inscription reads: "To Fred / anyone that needs information about ice skates should see you. Boy!! you set me right. / Lots of luck - / Ralph English / Ice Cycles 1931". Very good .

The backstrip & rear wrap are lacking. The cover is bumped, chipped & lightly soiled. Pages A-D [ads] & 67 pages, including additional ads. Numerous sepia-toned & black-and-white illustrations & pictorial ads. 1 signature is detached with its front edges roughed & chipped. There are tears to the top edge & front edge of page 41 & to the top edges of pages 42-48. There is a piece out of the bottom corner of the last page. The top edges of the pages are rippled, probably from humidity. There is occasional soiling. Fair.

"The Mentor" often highlighted a particular theme and this issue, published three months after Houdini's death, focused on magic and magicians. Among the contents are "Magic Old and New from Paracelsus to Houdini" by Clement King; and articles on Robert Houdin's "Historic Handkerchief Conjuring Feat", "Mesmer the Mesmerist", Count Cagliostro, and tribal magic in Guiana.
