APPLE, SAM.  Schlepping Through The Alps: My Search For Austria's Jewish Past With Its Last Wandering Shepherd.
Ballantine Books, New York: 2005. Hardcover with dustjacket. Very good condition. Hans Breuer, Austria's only wandering shepherd, is also a Yiddish folk singer. He walks the Alps, shepherd's stick in hand, singing lullabies to his 625 sheep. Sometimes he even gives concerts in historically anti-Semitic towns, showing slides of the flock as he belts out Yiddish ditties. When New York-bassed writer Sam Apple hears about the one-of-a-kind eccentric, he flies overseas and signs on as a shepherd's apprentice. For thoroughly urban, slightly neurotic Sam, stumbling along in borrowed boots and burdened with a lot more baggage than his backpack, the task is far from a walk in Central Park. Demonstrating no natural talent for shepherding, he tries to earn the respect of Breuer's sheep, while keeping a safe distance from the shepherd's fierce herding dogs. As this strange and hilarious adventure unfolds, the unlikely duo of Sam and Hans meanders through a paradise of woods and high meadows toward awkward encounters with Austirans of many stripes. Apple is determined to find out if there are really as many anti-Semites in Austria as he fears and to understand how Hans who grew up fighting the lingering Nazism in vienna, became a wandering shepherd in the first place. What Apple discovers turns out to be far more fascinating than he could have imagined.

PLECHL, PIA MARIA (INTRODUCTORY ESSAY); PFLANZER, HELLA (PHOTOGRAPHS);M POTSCHNER, PETER (CHRONOLOGICAL TABLE OF VIENNA'S HISTORY).  Impressions Of Vienna.
Pinguin-Verlag, Innsbruck: 1993. Hardcover with dustjacket. Very good condition. From year to year Vienna acquires greater international significandce, holding its own place in international cultural affairs, increasingly becoming a pivot between West and East, developing into a focal point of Europe. Numerous monuments of cultural and historic significance are cherished and lavishly restored here; new buildings and sculptures are created, arousing controversy among the Viennese. This book also takes that aspect into account, showing traditionally famous sights and the latest works. The book's concept is also new: the town is presented in the changing seasons. In the introductory essay Dr. Pia Maria Plechl relates the history of the city and its cultural development. A chronological table of Vienna's history from the pre-historic period to the present provides a concise survey of the city's past and its culture.
