This Bible is printed identically the same setting of type as an edition issued with the date 1633; the latter, however, has a new imprint on the three title-pages and at the end of the book: "Imprinted at Amsterdam, for Thomas Crafoorth. By Iohn Fredericksz Stam.." Probably 1633 is the correct date, and copies were issued simultaneously, some with Barker's imprint and the date 1599, others with Stam's imprint dated 1633.".

The city was already an established center of printing woodcuts, engravings and books." - See Wapedia.

Black letter "breeches" bible. A very good full leather binding, professionally rebacked, the spine with 4 raised bands and recent brown leather title label. The Prayer Book precedes the bible and is incomplete. The Bible title page has an ornate wood-cut border and is dated 1597. There is light soiling and a tear (affecting half of the leaf), has been carefully repaired. "Of the incomparable treasure.." to verso. Followed by "To the Christian Reader." with; "Howe to take profite by reading the Holy Scriptures." to verso (outer top corner torn-away, affecting a couple of words of text). Genesis starts on f.1 . The Old testament ends on f.358. The Apocrypha ends on f.434 a (the verso blank except for details of the Cartor family, which then overfolw onto the border of the New Testament title page and the verso). The New Testament has a separate title page (of a similar design to the general title), also dated 1597. The title has chipped edges and a 2" tear. There are 3 preliminary leaves, the Matthew starts on f.441. The New Testament is complete and ends on f.554 b. Followed by; "Two Right Profitable and fruitfull Concordances.." (the title page is undated). Bound with: "The Whole Booke of Psalmes.. London: Printed by John Windet for the Assignes of Richard Daye, 1597." The printed title is present, as are all of the Psalmes, however the last leaf is "Morning prayer ." (so I think there are two leaves absent). Clear black letter text throughout, in two columns, with marginal notations and good margins. Pages lightly soiled and the last few leaves of the psalmes carefully repaired. Still a well preserved copy of a scarce 16th century bible. Includes a loosely inserted letter from the British Museum dated 8th August 1968, stating that they do not give valuations and that they already have a 1597 bible in their collection. Referenced by Herbert 234 / Darlow & Moule 181(although NT title is dated 1597 instead of 1596).
