Prints are reproduced on a very delicate; possibly rice, paper. Statement from book: "While wood engraving is an ancient Chinese art-printing technique, the modern woodcut has a history of only about 20 years, being introduced in the early 1930's by Chinese writers who found all other avenues of expression closed to them by Chiang Kai-shek's White Terror. Taking the revolutionary prints of Kathe Kollwitz as their inspiration, China's progressive young writers made the woodcut a formidable weapon in the people's struggle for a new and better life. The simplicity of the materials--wood blocks and a few cutting tools--made production inexpensive, while the directness and boldness of the style and the revolutionary content made the new woodcut immediately popular with the then largely illiterate common people. Today the woodcut continues as a living, growing people's art form, capturing the spirit of the new times".
