Front cover pictorial includes Haitian flag. 122 pages, with 6 full-page illustrations, including frontis, by John McCullough. Also, frontis photos of Booker T. Washington, and Miss Henrietta Vinton Davis, tragedienne. Plus, a full page photo portrait of James B. Clarke, with an article by him on Haitian history; illustrated with facsimiles of engravings of Haitian notables. And, a full-page photo portrait of Harriet Tubman (at 100+ years old), plus a full-page portrait of her in 1861, accompanying a rear section entitled "An Hour With Harriet Tubman". Covers are fairly bright, with creasing, scattered grease staining, and moderate edge-chipping. Small grease stains to the tops of first 2 pages. Good. Scarce. Good.

EDWARDS, HARRY STILLWELL  Two Runaways and Other Stories
New York, The Century Co. 1889. Hard Cover. Possibly inscribed by the author. Inscription on front free endpaper: "Compliments/ J.F. Paull 1899". (J.F. Paull was a prominent businessman in Wheeling, WV). Handwriting is very similar to another sample of Edwards'. Hardcover, no jacket. Elaborately blindstamped olive green cloth with gilt stamped spine titles. Size: octavo. 246 pages, with full page b&w illustrations, including frontis, by E.W. Kemble. Untrimmed fore and bottom edges. From the preface: "The elements dealt with in these stories are the brighter and better parts of the older negro character, and of some of the people whose lives touch or touched his". Solid book with fairly bright boards, light wear, and minor soiling. A touch of spine tanning, and a bit of rubbing to spine titles, which are still bright. Text has occasional minor soiling. Bookseller sticker (Stanton's Old City Book Store, Wheeling, W.Va.) on the front pastedown. VG. Very Good. Signed.
