Henry James: Letters to A C Benson and Auguste Monod; now first published, and edited with an Introduction by E F Benson (LIMITED EDITION)
Elkin Matthews and Marrot, London, 1930. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Fair Condition. number 574 of an edition limited to 1050 copies; limitation page; title page & introduction by E. F. Benson to front. Arthur Christopher Benson, (24 April 1862 – 17 June 1925) was an English essayist, poet and academic, and the 28th Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge. In 1884, Benson met Henry James, who would later become a close friend. These letters of Henry James to Arthur Christopher Benson, are extracted from a correspondence that extended over twenty years. Some of them (and those among the most interesting) have been omitted because they have already appeared in Mr. Percy Lubbock's admirable edition of his letters; others because they deal with mere trivialities. The residue, here for the first time published by permission of the writer's nephew and namesake, exhibit in his own inimitable manner the two ruling devotions of one of the most lovable of men. We find in them first of all the quality of his affection to his friends. No one valued and needed friendship more than he, and few can have had a larger company of those with whom he established and maintained a special relation. Long intervals often elapsed during which he neither saw nor wrote to them, but, when once the relationship was established, the silver cord was never loosed, and he took hold on it again in all its brightness, and demanded to know all that had happened to the absent and how and when and why. Limited & Numbered Edition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. ix + 118. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. no Dust Jacket as published.. Burgess, Anthony
Flame into Being: The Life and Work of D H Lawrence
Heinemann, London, 1985. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. 9780434098187 Burgess considered D. H. Lawrence to be one of the pillars of English literature and indeed a Modernist writer whose work had changed the face of the novel in the early 20th century. Flame into Being was first published in 1985 to mark the centenary of Lawrence's birth and gave Burgess the chance to write a celebratory but also a brilliant (and short) introduction to the major books in Lawrence's oeuvre. It is a beautifully written, entertaining and thoroughly accessible gateway to D. H. Lawrence aimed at both the general reader and students. Between his death and the outbreak of the Second World War Lawrence was remembered as a doubtful prophet but almost totally ignored as a writer. He had written a dirty book and had his exhibition of dirty paintings raided by the police; the brilliance of Sons and Lovers and Women in Love had either not been acknowledged or had been occluded'. Flame into Being examines Lawrence's work in its entirety, not just the well-known novels, and how, in the years following the second World War, he gained recognition as one of the twentieth century's most original and outstanding authors. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xi + 211. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Price clipped inside book. Gilt titles spine. Multiple copies available this title. orange cloth. Chiari, Joseph, T. S. Eliot: Poet and Dramatist.
Chiari, Joseph
T. S. Eliot: Poet and Dramatist.
Vision Press Limited, London, 1972. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Near Fine. One of T. S. Eliot's closest friends has here written an important new appraisal of the poet's work. Dedicated with her approval to Eliot's widow Valerie, the book commences by placing Eliot's first published works in relation to the background of early twentieth-century thought and sensibility. Dr Chiari goes on to examine the poetry phase by phase, dealing with individual poems such as Prufrock; Gerontion, The Waste Land, Ash Wednesday and The Quartets. Thereafter he considers the dramatic writings that precede the plays, such as Sweeney Agonistes and The Rock, and finally the plays themselves. The conclusion attempts to assess Eliot's place and significance in contemporary literature. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 167 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Slight foxing to top edge. Dust Jacket is in as new condition, apart from normal shop shelf wear - contains no tears or chips or other damage. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Gilt titles spine. green cloth. First Thus, Hardcover (Full Leather). Poor Condition. The second volume (only) being books13-24 of this two-volume English translation of 'Les Aventures de Télémaque' (The Adventures of Telemachus) a didactic French novel by Fénelon, Archbishop of Cambrai, who in 1689 became tutor to the seven-year-old Duc de Bourgogne (grandson of Louis XIV and second in line to the throne). It was published anonymously in 1699 and reissued in 1717 by his family. The slender plot fills out a gap in Homer's Odyssey, recounting the educational travels of Telemachus, son of Ulysses, accompanied by his tutor, Mentor, who is revealed at the end of the story to be Minerva, goddess of wisdom, in disguise. Although set in a far off place and ancient time, Télémaque was immediately recognized by contemporaries as a scathing rebuke to the autocratic reign of Louis XIV of France, whose wars and taxes on the peasantry had reduced the country to famine. Louis XIV, who had previously banished Fénelon from Versailles and confined him to his diocese because of a religious controversy, was so angered by the book that he maintained those restrictions on Fénelon's movements even when the religious dispute was resolved. Yet a few years later royal panegyrists were hailing the young king Louis XV as a new Telemachus and flattering his tutors as new "Mentors". An early parallel text edition with facing pages in French & English. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 184 pages. One volume of the 2-volume set. The Transatlantic Review, Volume 1, Number 1 (January 1924)
Magazine/Periodical Gerald Duckworth & Co Ltd. London, 1924. First Edition, Softcover. Good Condition. London edition of the first issue of this important and influential literary journal edited in Paris by Ford Madox Ford. Includes two early "Cantos" by Ezra Pound, four poems by E. E. Cummings & one by A. E. Coppard and the first instalment of 'The Nature of a Crime', a book Ford had written some years before in collaboration with Joseph Conrad but which only now received official recognition. To conclude the opening section of the review, there is a sketch in French on the Place de la Concorde by Jean Cassou; a short story, "Elsie", by Robert McAlmon; and "Stocktaking" by "Daniel Chaucer", the pseudonym adopted by Ford for his literary observations. Luke Ionides' "Memories" - an interesting series of reminiscences of Whistler, Wilde, and numerous Pre-Raphaelites also made its first appearance in this issue & ran through the life of the magazine. In the second section of the magazine came the "Chroniques", whose purpose was to provide a survey of artistic and literary achievement in Paris, London, and New York. After a section containing "Communications" from well-wishers such as T. S. Eliot, Thomas Hardy, H. G. Wells and Joseph Conrad, the 120-page number closed with the first instalment of Ford's own novel, 'Some Do Not'. The Transatlantic Review, although it published only 12 issues - one in each month in 1924 - had an influential impact on early 20th-century English literature. 8 pages of adverts to front & rear. Selected Works: Sorrows of Young Werther; Elective Affinities; Faust; Italian Journey; Novella; Selected Poems & Letters (Everyman's Library Classics Number 246)
Everyman's Library, London, 1999. First Thus, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. 9781857152463 Titles; contents list; introduction by Nicholas Boyle; select bibliography & chronology to front. Integral grey silk bookmark. Though one of the towering figures of world literature, Goethe has long been neglected in the Anglo-Saxon world. This collection of his four major works, together with a selection of his finest letters and poems, should show that he is not only one of the very greatest European writers: he is also accessible, entertaining and contemporary. 'The Sorrows of Young Werther' is a story of self-destructive love which made the twenty-five year old author a celebrity overnight. Its exploration of the conflicts between ideas and feelings, circumstance and desire, continues in 'Elective Affinities'. The cosmic drama of 'Faust' goes far beyond the realism of the novels in a poetic exploration of good and evil, while the 'Italian Journey', written in the author's old age, recalls his youth in Italy and the impact of Mediterranean culture on a young Northerner. Four very different books which illustrate the extraordinary scope and brilliance of Germany's greatest writer. Translators include W. H. Auden, Louise Bogan, David Constantine, Barker Fairley and Elizabeth Mayer. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. LXiii + 1180. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Gilt titles on black panel spine. green cloth.
