The Victoria History of the County of York East Riding. Volume I: The City of Kingston upon Hull

The development of the docks is examined in detail, and there are accounts of the Hull Trinity House and of some outstanding surviving buildings, including a number of warehouses. 'All Things is Well Here' Letters From Hugh James of Levens to James Grahme, 1692-95 (CWAAS Record Series Vol. X)
Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society, Cumbria, 1988. First Edition, Softcover. Fine Condition. 9780950077987 Inscribed by Author. inscription on pre-title page reads "from the author New Year 1988"; Colonel James Grahme, one-time Privy Purse to James II and Master of the King's Buckhounds, man about Court, friend of the Monarch and also of the Monarch's mistress, found life difficult on the accession of William and Mary. Suddenly he became a suspected traitor, Catholic, and plotter. That he was none of these things, or only in a very small way, did nothing to make his circumstances more comfortable. He bought Levens from his cousin Alan Bellingham in 1689, and prepared to make this house in Westmorland fit for a civilised man to inhabit with his wife and family. Grahme spent much of his time away from Levens so corresponded with the men left to further his interests & direct his works. Hundreds of these letters survive & those printed here, from his steward Hugh James, are of especial interest for their vividness & quality of information. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 205 pages. 1870724682 Batcheler, Kenneth C., A Century of Cambridgeshire Parish Councils, 1894-1994
Batcheler, Kenneth C.
A Century of Cambridgeshire Parish Councils, 1894-1994
Cambridgeshire Libraries Publications, March, Cambridgeshire, 1994. First Edition, Softcover. As New. 9781870724685 On the eve of another local government re-organisation, parish councils celebrate 100 years of their history. The Local Government Act 1894, which set up parish councils, was hailed as the "Charter of the Peasants' Liberty". It would abolish patronage and banish privilege. For the rule of the few, it would substitute the responsibility of the many. How far have these high hopes been justified in practice? In this book Kenneth Batcheler shows what really happened, the serious and some of the funny moments, in one county Cambridgeshire. He begins by looking at the early years in the life of parish councils and then turns his attention to particular aspects of their work, such as fire, drainage and sanitation, water supply, lighting and transport. Although all the high romantic hopes may not have been fully realised, Mr. Batcheler shows that parish councils have grown through the years in importance and in influence, as an essential part of our democratic system of government. The text is enlivened by photographs, cartoons and posters from the Cambridgeshire Collection. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 106 pages. no Dust Jacket as published.. Blue titles spine. illustrated by b/w. photo's.. Includes bibliography, index & appendices;. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 250 grams. Burnt Fen is located near the eastern borders of the Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire, although parts of it are also located in Suffolk and Norfolk. It is an area of prime agricultural land, which is mostly below sea level, and all of it is below the normal flood levels of the rivers which surround it on three sides and is therefore totally reliant on pumped drainage for its existence as it has been for many years. This informative & well illustrated booklet covers the history of this district, its drainage & its commissioners with appendices on pumping machinery & a listing of commissioner's names. Bell, Robert
Wisbech: Town and City Memories
The Francis Frith Collection, Salisbury, Wiltshire, 2005. First Thus, Softcover. Very Good Condition. 9781845890315 Wisbech is located around ninety miles to the north of London, at the coming together of the three counties of Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Lincolnshire. Despite being several miles from the sea, Wisbech is the only seaport in Cambridgeshire. The town's former importance as an administrative and commercial centre is sometimes overlooked, prompting queries as to why the town is referred to as the 'Capital of the Fens'. The rise of Peterborough over me last hundred years or so, and the relative prosperity of Wisbech's other important neighbour, King's Lynn, as well as the stripping away of most of its municipal powers in the 1970s, has seen a decline in the town's status. The sense of isolation has been compounded by the reduction of me town's rail links to a single freight line. Revised Edition. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 92 pages. no Dust Jacket as published.. Bishop, Peter
The Sacred and Profane History of Bury St. Edmunds
Unicorn Press, London, 1998. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. 9780906290255 St. Edmund had been 30 years dead when they brought his remains to Bury 1100 years ago. His sometimes savage miracles and the many riots against his Abbey endowed the town not only with riches but with both neurosis and notoriety. Its central streets. unchanged to this day, were laid out by a couple of Norman abbots and modernised by the genteel taste of the 18th. century, the two periods of its greatest fame. A remarkable story of frivolity and conflict, brutality and charity, religious fervour and secular greed. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 168 pages. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. b/w. frontis. sketches of Woodbridge Market Place, Framlingham Castle & Walberswick Railway Station; front endpaper b/w. illustrated tobacco advert.; rear cover medicines advert.; Birkbeck Bank Advert inside rear cover; Great Eastern Railway advert. with ticket prices & destinations opposite contents page; further local adverts to rear pages plus 15 pages publisher's adverts.; Excerpt from the introduction: "It is difficult to analyse the fascination of East Anglia, to discover exactly what it is that gives the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk the charm they undoubtedly possess. And yet, when once you have yielded to that charm, what a sway it holds over you! I have toured all over England, and fallen in love with a thousand places, but I love East Anglia most of all. Perhaps it is because it is still so oldfashioned, so out of the world, and yet within such easy reach of it. Two hours after you leave Liverpool Street you can be on a farm where they plough with bullocks, or on a common where you meet shepherds with long smocks and hooks, looking for all the world like overgrown and antiquated Little Boy Blues; or I could deposit you in an out-of-theway corner on the sea-coast where there are fishermen who still use wooden fish-hooks, and this at the end of the nineteenth century, when in London we are hearing of flying machines and submarine boats, where we have mutoscopes and motor cars at our doors, and where the Rontgen rays are ready to reveal our innermost selves to the outside world." Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 132 pages. Round-cut outer corners to pages & covers;.
