Alexander & Pullinger, John & Joyce, Roman Cambridge: Excavations on Castle Hill 1956-1988 (Proceedings of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society Volume LXXXVIII)
Alexander & Pullinger, John & Joyce
Roman Cambridge: Excavations on Castle Hill 1956-1988 (Proceedings of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society Volume LXXXVIII)
Cambridge Antiquarian Society, Cambridge, 2000. First Edition, Softcover. Good Condition. Many of the excavations took place in the small areas which became available when individual houses were levelled, so that the information recovered was minimal, but the three larger areas, the market-gardens owned by St. John's College, the farm owned by the Charity of Edmund Storey and the area around Shire Hall proved particularly important and have allowed an outline history of the town nucleus from the last centuries BC until the 5th century AD to be compiled. An unexpected complication of the fieldwork proved to be that the keeping of the hillside free from buildings for centuries allowed the quarrying of the valuable gravel and chalk marl of which it is composed and the digging of many pits. Only careful trowelling allowed the areas of early land surfaces and the wooden structures on them to be recognised. It will be noted from the plan of excavations (Fig 1.1) that work was largely limited to the upper hillsides and the summit, so that only a partial recognition of the early settlement has been obtained. The lower slopes and the area near the bridge have not been available for study and it may well be that these were more densely inhabited. Crusader Archaeology: The Material Culture of the Latin East
Routledge, London, 1999. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/No Dust Jacket. 9780415173612 to front: titles; contents; illustrations list; preface; notes of place-names; abbreviations & chronology. One of the most fascinating and intriguing aspects of historical research is the study of how invading societies adapt to a strange environment, undergoing change themselves as well as influencing their new neighbours and surroundings. From the end of the eleventh century there were Christian states in the Levant which were hybrid societies resulting from the meeting of the very different cultures of the East and West. Although a wealth of literature has been written on the Crusading movement affording a clearer picture of what the Crusades entailed, little has been written to illuminate Frankish life in "the lands beyond the sea. " Crusader Archeology draws together recently excavated material from Israel, Cyprus, Syria and Jordan to examine what life was life for the Crusaders in their new territory, and how they were influenced by the local population. Chapters encompass Frankish urban and rural settlements, including agriculture, industry, the differing architecture employed by the military, the church, public and private structures, arts and crafts, leisure pursuits, death and burial customs, and building techniques. This highly illustrated volume comprises a graphic portrayal of the period and makes fascinating reading for all those interested in the Middle Ages, and particularly in the Crusaders Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xxi + 267. The South East to AD 1000
Longman, Harlow, Essex, 1988. First Paperback Edition, Paperback, Illustrated by: Photo's & Drawings. Near Fine/N/A. 9780582492721 black titles spine; N.B. - this book is for sale only with it's companion volume -"South-East from AD 1000" (the books are priced individually); one of the 'A Regional History of England' series; front cover illust. shows excavation of Bronze Age barrow at West Heath, West Sussex; illustrated throughout with maps, diagrams and half-tones; "This is the first full account of the South East (the modern counties of Kent, Surrey and Sussex) from the first appearance of Man in Britain to the Early Middle Ages. Through a synthesis of the findings of archaeological research the authors present the development of human culture in the region from before 300,000 BC. Their particular emphasis on economic archaeology enables them to uncover the region's trade and redistribution networks. These reveal the insular nature of much of the South East's development, despite its contacts with other parts of Britain and Europe. The authors discuss the producers of wealth - farmers, craftsmen, peasants, serfs and slaves - rather than those who simply manipulated it. They find continuity in the development of farming practice but a concomitant discontinuity in ceremonial and social organisation. Intensive development, road construction, and especially ploughing have destroyed many archaeological sites in South East England. Fortunately key sites have been saved by archaeologists working under rescue conditions. This book is written by three archaeologists who have attempted to follow research themes through their rescue archaeology. This, combined with the increasing refinement of archaeological recovery techniques, has resulted in a book which contains a wealth of new data and ideas. It will be widely welcomed by readers both in and out of the South East, and mark a further important addition to this distinguished series."; including index & bibliography - 384 pages. Feacham, Richard, A Guide to Prehistoric Scotland
Feacham, Richard
A Guide to Prehistoric Scotland
B. T. Batsford Ltd. London, 1963. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. The structural remains which constitute the visible record of the human occupation of Scotland in The prehistoric times are spread in profusion throughout the mainland and the islands. A great many of them, and of the relics of bone, stone, pottery and metal which were used, and in cases made, by their builders, are well known both locally and over a wider field, In some parts of the country, however, little or no systematic recording or investigation of the virtually unlimited store of prehistoric material which these structures and relics represent has been undertaken, so that considerable areas are still archaeologically unexplored and our knowledge of the distribution and nature of even the major classes of monuments is little more than rudimentary. After an introductory chapter, the main body of the work is arranged as far as possible in chronological order, the system adopted being based on the classification of monuments under ten headings. Five of these cover the period from the earliest times down to the middle of the 1st millennium B.C. - the era of the primary exploration and exploitation of the land and its resources - and the other five cover the remaining half millennium, beginning at the time of the arrival of the earliest Celtic peoples & continuing up to the arrival of the Romans during the 1st century A.D. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 223 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Slight foxing to front endpaper.
