Dickey, Sara
Cinema and the Urban Poor in South India (Cambridge Studies in Social and Cultural Anthropology)
Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1993. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. 9780521440844 This study of the Indian cinema is concerned particularly with cinema-goers in Madurai, a city in Tamil Nadu, South India. Sara Dickey reviews the history of Tamil film, explains the structure of the industry, and presents the perspective of the filmmakers. However, the core of the book is an analysis of the films themselves and the place they have in the lives of poor people, who organize fan clubs, discuss the films and the actors, and in various ways relate these fantasy worlds to their own lives. Dickey argues that the effect of these films is ultimately conservative, for they glorify poverty while holding out the hope of a better future. Her rich ethnography makes an interesting contribution to the study of film in India and, more generally, to the understanding of popular culture in an Indian city. The Navaho: Revised Edition (Harvard Paperbacks)
Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Mass. USA, 2002. Reprint, Softcover. As New. 9780674606036 "This book is one of the most successful efforts so far to communicate the results of the anthropological study of one people to another people . the book is not addressed to the specialist in the study of culture . Without resort to dramatization or oversimplification, it should communicate to many kinds of readers the goals and viewpoints of the Navahos." This collaboration between an anthropologist and a medico-psychiatrist has been a fortunate one . This book teaches the salutary lesson that majority culture patterns are not self- justifying ... If we have achieved a greater mastery over the forces of nature than the Navahos, perhaps they have received more by experiencing the beauty and emotional values in nature than we. Mauss, Marcel
The Gift: The Form and Reason for Exchange in Archaic Societies
Routledge, London, 1997. Reprint, Softcover. Very Good Condition. 9780415044882 translated by W. D. Halls; foreword by Mary Douglas; Marcel Mauss was a French sociologist and anthropologist. His work profoundly influenced the field of anthropology with respect to topics such as magic, sacrifice, and gift exchange in primitive cultures. A brilliant example of the comparative method, 'The Gift' presents the first systematic study of the custom - -widespread in primitive societies from ancient Rome to present-day Melanesia - -of exchanging gifts. The gift is a perfect example of what Mauss calls a total social phenomenon, since it involves legal, economic, moral, religious, aesthetic, and other dimensions. He sees the gift exchange as related to individuals and groups as much as to the objects themselves, and his analysis calls into question the social conventions and economic systems that had been taken for granted for so many years. In a modern translation, introduced by distinguished anthropologist Mary Douglas, The Gift is essential reading for students of social anthropology and sociology. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xviii + 164. Text contains marks and notes scattered throughout, in pencil. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. no Dust Jacket as published.. White titles spine. Includes indexes of names & subject plus an extensive notes section. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams. Edward Marsh, London, 1844. First Edition, Hardcover (Half Leather). Near Fine Condition. Some Account of the Conduct of the Religious Society of Friends towards the Indian Tribes in the Settlement of the Colonies of East and West Jersey and Pennsylvania: with a brief narrative of their labours for the civilization and Christian instruction of the Indians, from the time of their settlement in America, to the year 1843. Beautifully rebound in half-leather with five raised bands & marbled boards with brown end-papers; coloured frontis. map of aboriginal country east of the river Mississippi, exhibiting the territory which the several Indian nations occupied previously to the settlement of the English colonies in America. Scott, Peter, Wild Geese and Eskimos, A Journal of the Perry River Expedition of 1949
Scott, Peter
Wild Geese and Eskimos, A Journal of the Perry River Expedition of 1949
Country Life Ltd. London, 1951. First Edition, Green Cloth, Illustrated by: Photo's & Drawings. Good/No Jacket. gilt titles spine; gilt vignette (geese in flight) front; map endpapers (in green) showing route of expedition; col. frontis (pair of Ross's Geese); illustrated throughout by 36 b/w. photo's.; 2 further b/w. maps & numerous b/w. line drawings; "among the world's waterfowl - the ducks, geese and swans - there are several species which have become so greatly reduced in numbers that they face early extinction unless steps are taken at once to avert it. Much more needs to be discovered about the birds themselves before we know where, when and how best to take those steps. The beautiful little Ross's geese, whose nesting colonies were found for the first time in 1938, are among those which are threatened, for their world population is probably no more than 5,000, possibly much less. It was for this specific reason that the Perry River Expedition of 1949 was undertaken. The journal which follows is a daily record of two very happy summer months among the wild geese and the Eskimos."; spine gilts faded & light wear to extremities but a sound copy; including appendices & index - 254 pages.
