MYSLIWIEC, KAROL  Eros on the Nile
Duckworth. 2004. (ISBN: 0715633023) Hard Cover. According to Karol Mysliwiec in this fascinating book, daily life in ancient Egypt was saturated with eroticism and much influenced by cult and magic. Ancient Egyptian religion, with its variety of gods all living, feeling and reacting like mortals, provides valuable insight into the human lifestyles of the day. Eros on the Nile looks at the erotic concepts and practices of the ancient Egyptians as recorded in art and literature, examining the cult of the king and his relationship with the gods as reflected in a legend depicting the royal child as the fruit of a relationship between a god and an earthly women. The book discusses in detail the special religious and political role of royal women, which found expression in the institution of the 'god's wife', and describes and illustrates sexual episodes depicted in the Turin Papyrus, a unique document dating from the time of the New Kingdom. Contrasting with the somewhat brutal naturalism of these scenes is the subtle sensuality of Ancient Egyptian love poetry, excerpts from which are quoted in the book. This book, illustrated with over 100 photographs including 19 in colour, includes some recent archaeological discoveries by the aut. New/New - Slight Shelf Wear.

ROMER, JOHN  Ancient Lives : The Story of the Pharaoh's Tombmakers
Phoenix. 2003. (ISBN: 1842120441) Soft Cover. More than 3000 years ago a village was established at Thebes on the west bank of the Nile. Situated amid a barren and arid landscape, it housed the workers who created the tombs of the Pharaohs and the Valley of the Kings. It was through death and the ritual of burial that the Pharaohs became gods, and their elaborately carved and decorated temples were an essential part of this mystical process. Stonemasons, painters, sculptors, quarrymen, lived with their wives and children in the village, and worked closely together in the sacred valley. As well as building the magnificent tombs of the Pharaohs, they built their own tombs, erected temples for the village gods, and wrote prayers and recorded their thoughts on stone and papyri. This is the story of the Egyptian tomb-makers who, shortly after the death of Ramesses II, staged the first industrial action in recorded history. As the wealth of the Pharaohs dwindled, the tomb- makers began to plunder the very tombs they had built, helping to plunge Egypt into a spiral of decline and anarchy from which she never recovered. New/New.

SHAW, IAN  Ancient Egypt
Oxford. 2004. (ISBN: 0192854194) Soft Cover. The ancient Egyptians are an enduring source of fascination - mummies and pyramids, curses and rituals have captured the imagination of generations. We all have a mental picture of ancient Egypt, but is it the right one? How much do we really know about this great civilization? In this absorbing introduction, Ian Shaw describes how our current ideas about Egypt are based not only on the thrilling discoveries made by early Egyptologists but also on fascinating new kinds of evidence produced by modern scientific and linguistic analyses. He also explores the changing influences on our responses to these finds, through such media as literature, cinema and contemporary art. SMITH, JOSH; NOTHDURFT, WILLIAM  The Lost Dinosaurs of Egypt
Random House. 2003. (ISBN: 0375507957) Hard Cover. In 1911, Dr Ernst Stromer led an expedition to Egypt's Bahariya Oasis in the Sahara and discovered four new species of dinosaurs, including the tyrannosaurus rex - sized predator Spinosaurus. Following the 1910 - 1914 expedition, Stromer returned, with the fossils, maps and details of his discovery, to Munich. But, tragically, all of his work was incinerated in 1944 during the Allied bombing of the city. In 1999, University of Pennsylvania graduate student Josh Smith and a team of fourteen scientists, under the direction of world-renowned paleontologist Dr Peter Dodson, returned to Egypt to retrace Stromer's steps. Working on luck as much as scientific analysis, the team blundered onto an archaeological site that has yielded awe-inspiring results: an entirely new genus of dinosaur, Paralititan Stromeri, the second largest dinosaur to walk the earth. SMITH, G. ELLIOT  The Royal Mummies
Duckworth Egyptology. 2005. (ISBN: 071562959x) Soft Cover, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Egypt is unique among ancient civilisations in that the physical remains of a good many of the country's ruling elite, thanks to mummification, have survived intact down to the present day. Originally buried in splendour in the Valley of the Kings and elsewhere, these mummies were later hidden for safekeeping in a number of easily guarded 'caches' dotted around the vast Theban necropolis. Two were discovered in 1881 (at Deir el-Bahri) and 1898 (in the tomb of Amenophis II), containing the bodies of more then 50 kings, queens, lesser royals and nobles who lived in the second half of the second millennium BC. "The Royal Mummies", first published in 1912 and long out of print, remains the basic text on the Egyptian royal dead. Heavily illustrated with photographs and line drawings, it includes extensive physical and archaeological descriptions of all the principal human remains from the two finds, including some of Egypt's most famous kings - Ahmose, Tuthmosis III, Amenophis III, Akhenaten, Sethos I and Ramesses II. New/New - Slight Shelf Wear.
