ANTONOV, ROUMEN  Antonov - My Story
Read Books. 1999. (ISBN: 095341860x) Soft Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Roumen Antonov escaped to the West from Bulgaria in 1988 at the age of 44, after continual conflict with the repressive forces of the communist authorities. He is now a citizen of France. There, this polymath scientist-engineer quickly made up for lost time by further developing projects begun behind the Iron Curtain. The first of these to attract public attention was his unique automatic automotive transmission, now licensed to several leading car manufacturers by Antonov Automotive Technologies, quoted on the London Stock Exchange. Yet Roumen Antonov's most remarkable discovery is in the field of medicine. His enquiring intellect considered over a long period the part played in our bodily health by parasitic fungi. This led to the announcement of the Antonov Symbiotic Theory, which has already aroused keen interest in medical circles worldwide, and is likely to enhance the future quality if life for all of us. Very Good/Very Good.

ARNOTT, PAUL  Good Likeness, A: A Personal Story of Adoption
Altrincham, United Kingdom, Abacus. 2001. (ISBN: 0349113289) Soft Cover, 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. Paul Arnott has two very early memories. One is as a two-year-old having a bath in a hotel sink in Tenby; the other, a Bromley afternoon, when Mr and Mrs Arnott told Paul that "his real Mummy and Daddy couldn't keep him" - and that they had adopted him. Then, for 30 years, he barely gave his adoption a moment's thought - until the observation of the likeness between his son and himself provoked a quest to find his own biological parents. What he discovered was a near-complete family in Ireland - his parents had later married and since had four other children, lighting a candle in his name every day for 33 years. His biography weaves historical, political, religious and psychological thought into a personal narrative of the hopes, "what-ifs", and discoveries of the author's quest. He talks to those of his parent's generation who did not yield to the pressure to abandon the illegitimate, and to the children with very different stories to tell, as well as priests and politicians, newfound families and the supportive or unreconciled adoptive relatives. As New/As New.

ASHTON, ROSEMARY  G. H. Lewes
Mississauga, ON, Canada, Random House of Canada, Limited. 2000. (ISBN: 0712666893) Soft Cover, Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Synopsis G H Lewes was a deeply unconventional Victorian. Though he is best remembered for the liaison with George Eliot - marriage in all but name - which occupied the last twenty-five years of his life, he was also a man and writer of strikingly varied interests and capacities. For the first time, Rosemary Ashton presents a full, scholarly account of his extraordinary life, based on extensive research and using previously unpublished material. Lewes was a journalist, novelist, playwright and actor, living in London's Bohemia and friendly with Dickens and Thackeray. He enjoyed an open marriage with Agnes Jervis, causing a scandal by condoning her relationship with his best friend Thornton Hunt. When he met Marian Evans in 1851 he was notorious as a radical, freethinker and free lover. Because of his endorsement of his wife's adultery and his registering of her four children by Hunt as his own, he was unable to divorce Agnes and marry Marian. Thus he was once more at the centre of a scandal when he set off with Marian for Weimar in 1854. Rosemary Ashton throws fresh light on the details of Lewes' elopement with Marian Evans; on his important Life of Goethe, written in Germany. Used - Good/Good.

The book ends with three of the longest footnotes in literary history, including a card game, a baseball thriller, and three unproduced short plays. Good/Good.

BEST, GEORGE  Blessed : The Autobiography
2002. (ISBN: 0091884705) Soft Cover, B Format. George Best needs little introduction. A legend in his own lifetime, he is undoubtedly the greatest footballer the UK has ever produced. Blessed with an extraordinary gift he brought a beauty and grace to the game never before seen. But Best was unable to cope with the success and fame his genius brought. His fabled story is littered with tales of women and sex and, of course, alcohol. Much has been written about Best, but very little substantiated by the man himself. That is until George Best opened his heart and engaged us in one of the most exhilarating life stories for years, Blessed. In his own words George recounts the halcyon days at Manchester United, the big games and European Cup win of '68. And then there's the heartbreaking truth about the death of his mother and his struggles with alcohol that forced him to face up to a life without drink. Blessed reveals the man behind the up-for-a-laugh, boozy, womanizing stereotype that had dogged George Best for so long. Open and honest about his mistakes, George is also incredibly candid about his triumphs, his regrets, and, only three years before his death, what he had hoped for the future. Very Good/Good - Crease to Cover.

O'BRIEN, CONOR CRUISE  Memoir : My Life and Themes
Profile Books. 1998. (ISBN: 1861971141) Hard Cover. The life and adventures of Conor Cruise O'Brien would be interesting even were he not such an intelligent writer. He spent his childhood in the shadow of the Easter Rising, torn between those relatives passionately committed to the Irish Revolution and those whose loyalties had led them to fight for the British Crown in France. He was the United Nations' man on the spot in the Congo and Katanga, and has much to say about the murders of Lumumba and Hammarskjold. His adventures in Irish politics and British journalism, his fight for academic freedom in Ghana and his intellectual campaign against terrorism--all these are interesting stories memorably, if self-servingly, told.
