| ECKSTEIN, EVE George S. Elgood ALPINE FINE ARTS. 1994, First Edition. (ISBN: 0881682691) Hard Cover. This record of the life and work of the artist, George Samuel Elgood (1851-1943), is written by his great niece, Eve Eckstein. Elgood was a man who travelled widely in order to paint gardens. Whether it was in his home county of Kent or as far afield as Girgenti in Sicily, in nearly 40 years he was to paint over 1000 watercolours, mostly of gardens, although his love of architecture is evident in many of his earlier works. He could be said to have been an early conservationist who loved the natural environment with which he surrounded himself both in Leicestershire and in Kent. A friend of Dean Hole of Rochester and also of Gertrude Jekyll, with whom he published a book in 1904 entitled "Some English Gardens", an acquaintance of William Robinson, Edward Lutyens and Ellen Terry, Elgood lived at the time of the Arts and Crafts Movement and was an enthusiast in this type of design. He was a member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours and exhibited at the Fine Art Society, the Royal Institute and also at the exhibition Le Pasage Anglais du Pre Raphalities Aux Symbolistes - Galleries des Luxembourg among many others. Eve Eckstein researched family records to chronicle his life, travels and his research into garden history and design in England and Italy. The book is illustrated with many previously unpublished works. New Mint Condition/New Mint Condition.
