Very good with light edgewear and soil. Originally published by Houghton Mifflin in 1881. Augustus Hoppin (1828-1896), with humor, describes his life as one of eleven children in the Auton House. After passing the bar, he decided against the law and turned to illustration, cartooning and satire for publications like Harper's Weekly. He was also a book illustrator. Very good .

Also he makes no note of bevelled edges or top edge gilt and only indicates gilt lettering on the spine, this copy has the lettering on the spine and front board. Very good .

The novel follows Lionel Lincoln, a Boston-born American of British noble descent who goes to England and returns a British soldier, and is forced to deal with the split loyalties in his family and friends in the Colonies and the British homeland. At the end of the novel, he returns to England with his wife Cecil, another American born cousin. Very good .

The header of both works is "Semaine Litteraire du Courrier des Etats-Unis". "The Weekly Literary Courier of the United States. Previous owner's ownership notes in French on the front free fly discuss his acquision of these books. A Curious compilation of French literature certainly pirated by this enterprising Franco-American publisher, who would do very well with Hugo's Les Miserables. Very good .
