This is a spectacularly preserved example of the 1978 Japanese five volume set comprised of the first four installments of the catalogue raisonné of the lithographic work plus the raisonné of the posters by the renowned late French (by way of Russia) master of Judaic imagery, Marc Chagall. These first Japanese translations were issued in illustrated white pebble-grained faux leather bindings with printed clear plastic dust jackets - each housed in its own substantial white faux leather ultrasuede-lined slipcase with the title and artwork debossed in gilt. Limited to one thousand sets only, this over the top production retailed for 325,000 yen! The lithographs contained in the original western printings are reproduced here as full-color tipped in plates, but please note that these were issued without any original graphics. They retain all the text of the French language editions augmented with Japanese translations plus captions for each of the entries. The set contains: "Chagall Lithographe: 1922-1957" (originally printed in 1958), Chagall Lithographe II: 1957-1962" (1963), "Chagall Lithographe III: 1962-1968" (1969), "Chagall Lithographe IV: 1969-1973" (1974), and "Les Affiches de Marc Chagall" (1975). A pristine example of this luxe undertaking with each volume numbered 0487 of 1000 and still housed in the publisher's printed cardboard protective shipping box.
