EL EXMO. SR. VICE-PRESIDENTE DE LOS ESTADOS-UNIDOS MEXICANOS SE HA SERVIDO DIRIGIRME EL DECRETO QUE SIGUE...
Mexico, April 11, 1834. One-page decree. 11 3/4 x 8 inches. Fine. Modification of the Texas colonization law of April 6, 1830. This Mexican law forbade settlement of emigrants from the United States in Texas and was one of the main stimuli for the Texas Revolution. This decree modifies one of the two objectionable articles, Article 10, so that the Colonies will now be subject to the chief or chiefs designated by the state government (instead of the previously appointed federal commissioner), and after the lands have been apportioned to the settlers, they will install their own municipal government in conformity with the laws of the state. One month later in May 1834, the anti-immigration articles of the 1830 law were suspended and Texas was again open to U. S. emigrants. Issued by Vice-President Valentin Gomez Farias and signed in type by Francisco Maria Lombardo, with his inked rubric. EBERSTADT TEXAS 332. STREETER 812n. No copy located on OCLC.
