BARBER, MALCOLM, The Trial of the Templars
BARBER, MALCOLM
The Trial of the Templars
London: The Folio Society, 2003. Reprint. Hardcover. Illustrated by Map Endpapers. Slight wear only to book and paper covered slipcase. Slipcase has light soil. ; Red cloth covered boards with gilt design on front and black titled bordered in white on spine, map endpapers, B&W and color illustrations ; 9.70 X 6.70 X 1.50 inches; 382 pages; The text of this edition follows that of the 1993 Canto printing with some emendations by the author. The book was first published in 1978 by Cambridge University Press. "The Templars fought against Islam in the crusader east for nearly two centuries. During that time the original small band grew into a formidable army, backed by an extensive network of preceptories in the Latin West. In October 1307, the members of this seemingly invulnerable and respected Order were arrested on the orders of Philip IV, King of France and charged with serious heresies, including the denial of Christ, homosexuality and idol worship. The ensuing proceedings lasted for almost five years and culminated in the suppression of the Order. The motivations of the participants and the long-term repercussions of the trial have been the subject of intense and unresolved controversy, which still has resonances in our own time. In this new edition of his classic account, Malcolm Barber discusses the trial in the context of new work on the crusades, heresy, the papacy and the French monarchy.". The Secret Lives of Saints: Child Brides and Lost Boys in a Polygamous Mormon Sect
Toronto: Random House Canada, 2008. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. ISBN: 0307355888. Only slight wear ; A near-fine volume in a near-fine DJ, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped.; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 464 pages; "The Secret Lives of Saints paints a troubling portrait of an extreme religious sect. These zealous believers impose severe and often violent restrictions on women, deprive children of education and opt instead to school them in the tenets of their faith, defy the law and move freely and secretly over international borders. They punish dissent with violence and even death. No, this sect is not the Taliban, but North America's fundamentalist Mormons." The lost boys are the young men of marriageable age who cannot find a bride among their own people because the elders have spoken for all the young women from the time they would still be considered children in the outside world.. BUBER, MARTIN, Das Buch Der Zwölf
BUBER, MARTIN
Das Buch Der Zwölf
Berlin: Schocken Verlag, circa 1935. 1st Thus. Hardcover. Slight soil. ; This is from a deluxe set bound in vellum with gilt titles front and spine; Die Schrift #13; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 237 pages; Das Buch (Die Schrift) is the first translation of the Hebrew Bible into German, a language that would be more understandable to European Jews. "Born in Vienna, Buber came from a family of observant Jews, but broke with Jewish custom to pursue secular studies in philosophy. In 1902, he became the editor of the weekly Die Welt, the central organ of the Zionist movement, although he later withdrew from organizational work in Zionism. In 1923, Buber wrote his famous essay on existence, Ich und Du (later translated into English as I and Thou) , and in 1925, he began translating the Hebrew Bible into the German language. In 1930, Buber became an honorary professor at the University of Frankfurt am Main, but resigned in protest from his professorship immediately after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933. He then founded the Central Office for Jewish Adult Education, which became an increasingly important body as the German government forbade Jews to attend public education. In 1938, Buber left Germany and settled in Jerusalem, Mandate Palestine (later Israel)." Buber worked with Rosenzweig until ill health forced his co-translator to resign in 1929. The balance of work was done by Buber alone. With the rise of Nazism and the changes to the laws regulating the publishing industry, Verlag Lambert Schneider was forced to cede the publishing of this series to Schocken.. 1550173383 BURROWS, BOB, Healing in the Wilderness a History of the United Church Mission Hospitals
BURROWS, BOB
Healing in the Wilderness a History of the United Church Mission Hospitals
Madeira Park, BC: Harbour Publishing, 2004. First Edition. Paperback. ISBN: 1550173383. Signed by Author; Inscribed by the author on the title page. A bright, solid book, appears unread.; Trade PB; B&W Photographs; 9 X 6 X 0.60 inches; 240 pages; "This unforgettable story reveals how medical missionaries responded to crises, emergencies and sudden illnesses--including grizzly bear attacks and airplane crashes--without modern technology or urban hospitals. It portrays the small missions and infirmaries and tells how their staff handled life and death in the deep bush, on mountain ranges, in Native villages, on trackless prairies and on distant islands. It describes the sacrifices of devoted physicians, nurses and their families as they healed the sick and wounded, often under dreadful circumstances and in primitive conditions. Author Bob Burrows is uniquely qualified to relate this fascinating narrative of the United Church Mission Hospitals. A United Church minister for more than four decades, he has piloted an aircraft and captained a ship to deliver care to remote areas of British Columbia. He has also worked for both the BC and federal governments in positions of public trust dedicated to ensuring the human rights of aboriginal people, women and minority groups. ". Near Fine .
