The Rope in the Water a Pilgrimage to India
Toronto: Thomas Allen & Son, 2001. 1st. Hardcover. ISBN: 0919028438. Some edge wear to extremities of both book and dust jacket, previous owner's name on front free end paper ; A bright, solid book, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped.; 7.90 X 5.50 X 2 inches; 352 pages; "At Kovalam beach on India's southwestern shore I plunge into the Arabian Sea, the same soft temperature as the air...Looking shoreward, I see lifeguards gesturing. Since I'm much further than I imagined, I begin a determined swim toward them...The lifeguards continue to blast and gesture, but I'm powerless against the riptide irresistibly sweeping me out to sea. Though my situation appears hopeless, I'm about to undergo the most remarkable and mysterious event of my life...." So begins The Rope in the Water, the story of Sylvia Fraser's three-month pilgrimage to India in search of "something larger than myself, something deeper, something more."Travelling 12,000 kilometers across deserts and through jungles, Fraser visits sacred sites such as the twilight city of Varanasi on the Ganges, dense with the smoke of hundreds of funeral pyres; north to the glittering Golden Temple of the Sikhs; up Mount Abu where she stays with a Hindu sect called the Brahma Kumaris; south to a Buddhist retreat where she meditates eleven hours a day for ten days while observing a vow of silence; and to the Kovalam beach where her life is saved by a miracle.Fraser brings alive the sense-luscious tapestry of India, from its fluorescent seas of turbans and flowing robes, to the cerulean alleyways and the hot crush of urban bazaars, while exploring Eastern concepts such as "You create your own future" and "Change yourself and you change everything." Humourous and intelligent, The Rope in the Water is an uplifting yet earthbound literary odyssey for all those interested in the physical and philosophical worlds beyond their own.. 0670349836 HIBBERT, CHRISTOPHER, The Great Mutiny
HIBBERT, CHRISTOPHER
The Great Mutiny
New York: The Viking Press, 1978. First Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 0670349836. DJ and boards show very light shelf wear.; A bright, solid book, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped. B&W illustrations, glossary of terms used, chronological table, extensive notes & references, bibliography and index.; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 472 pages; In May 1857 3 regiments mutinied and went on a rampage in Meerut, near Delhi. It soon spread to all the Northwestern provinces - anyone of European descent was a target, British soldiers and their families, primary targets. Buildings were burned down and many were slaughtered. The sepoys vastly outnumbered the the British soldiers. "The final spark was provided by the ammunition for the new Enfield Pattern 1853 rifled musket. These rifles, which fired Minié balls, had a tighter fit than the earlier muskets, and used paper cartridges that came pre-greased. To load the rifle, sepoys had to bite the cartridge open to release the powder. The grease used on these cartridges was rumoured to include tallow derived from beef, which would be offensive to Hindus, and lard derived from pork, which would be offensive to Muslims." It was much more complicated than this of course. One only need to read this well researched history to understand.. Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket .

Beginning with the moving story of a shy, awkward boy from a provincial Indian city who married at thirteen, then was separated from his bride for years while he read law in London, the book describe Gandhi's life as a successful barrister in South Africa who turned his back on wealth to defend Indian settlers against discrimination and persecution. In the tradition of his best-selling biographies of Lenin and Schweitzer, Robert Payne's life brings Gandhi alive as a rounded personality. Payne superbly describes Gandhi's daring marches to aid the oppressed, his fasts and imprisonments, his historic achievements at international congresses and conferences in India and England where, clad only in shawl and loincloth, he met with prime ministers and viceroys and won their respect as he fought for the dignity and freedom of his people.". Men-At-Arms Series #67; 9.5 X 7.1 X 0.2 inches; 40 pages; On April 24th, 1855, Colonel Carmichael Smyth held a parade of the ninety skirmishers of the 3rd Light Cavalry of the Bengal Army at Meerut, some 30 miles from Delhi. Had the ensuing uprising succeeded, it would have threatened the validity of the entire British Empire. Christopher Wilikinson-Latham details the history of the conflict, from its beginnings to ultimate resolution.. Very Good+ .
