| PICHATTY DE CROISSANTE; DEFOE, DANIEL (TR. - ATTRIB.) A brief journal of what passed in the City of Marseilles, while it was afflicted with the plague, in the year 1720: extracted from the Register of the Council-Chamber of the Town-House, kept by Monsieur Pichatty de Croissainte (etc.) London: printed for J.Roberts, near the Oxford-Arms in Warwick-Lane, 1721, 1st edition thus; first published in French in 1720.Modern cloth.V.g./No Jacket. This translation of Pichatty's ""Journal abrégé de ce qui s'est passé en la ville de Marseille depuis qu'elle est affigée de la contagion"" is attributed by some to Daniel Defoe. The original work is very rare, as it was suppressed after publication.Pichatty de Croissante, councillor and orator in the City of Marseilles, also held the position of Procureur du Roi and was thus in charge of the police; he presented his account in the form of a diary, and it has been evaluated by Bertrand (in his history of the plague published in 1723) as being highly accurate. This copy, while well-preserved in a modern binding, is incomplete as it lacks pp.75-76; these were originally numbered 67 and 68 because pp.73-76 repeated the numbering of the previous four pages (pp.65-68).The original price (1s.) has been partly obliterated on the t.p.
