ISPHORDING, EDUARD  Kraeuter und Blumen: Botanische Buecher bis 1850 im Germanischen Nationalmuseum

NOLTIE, HENRY J.  The Dapuri drawings: Alexander Gibson of the Bombay Botanic Garden
Antique Collectors' Club, 2002, 1st edition.Hard covers, dust jacket.1 85149 422 7.V.g./Fine.Sl.curl to top edge of jacket, one corner sl.bumped, otherwise nearly new.Though the bulk of the book includes colour reproductions of botanical drawings of both indigenous and introduced Indian plants by an unknown Portuguese-Indian artist, the introductory material tells a meticulously researched story of discovery of the almost secret life of a Scottish surgeon turned colonial forest administrator and (in effect) director of one of the British East India Company's least known and shortest-lived botanic gardens at Dapuri near Mumbai (Bombay).Henry Noltie's languid yet engaging style belies an acuteness of observation; combining identifications of the illustrations with biographical research into Gibson's family, this book is perhaps the most authoritative monograph of botanical art history to have appeared so far this century. In English.
