ALBUM with handpainted coats of arms on vellum, cut out and mounted on stiff paper.
1865 With 4 pen-and-ink drawings and 52 coats of arms, some smaller drawings interspersed. 1 leaf, 23 leaves with contents, 13 blank leaves. 12mo. Contemp. calf, gilt fillets and gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt (rebacked with old spine laid down). N. pl., 1865. Charming gift album of delicately painted coats of arms, arranged two to seven on a page. On first flyleaf, there is the handwritten dedication "Rosa Moilliet from her loving sister E. Sophie Moilliet September 11th, 1865", with the drawing of a dog and two fowls. On the first leaf, another drawing shows a fantasy coat of arms made for the dog, flanked by two gentlemen, with a gilt banderole "Cave Canem" and the picture of the same dog above; underneath the text "Granted for deeds of valour done on the first of September 1865", in a different hand. Most of the colorful coats of arms are identified above in brown ink, i.e. Barclay, Trussell, Beauchamp, the See of Canterbury, the See of Worcester, Douglas, etc. The painter of these and of the drawings in between them was more than an amateur, they are exquisite, in brilliant colors and gold. They are possibly earlier than the date of the dedication suggests. MANUSCRIPTS: GENERAL ; GENEALOGY - HERALDRY ;

INSTRUMENTUM Pacis, Ab utriusq(ue) partis Plenipotentiariis, Caesareis & Regiis Suecicis, Osnabrugi d. 27. Julij, 6. Augusti, Anno M.DC.XLVIII. In Praesentia Sacri Romani Imperii Statuum, Apud Dnn. Suecicos Legatos congregatorum, Primò clarè & distinctè lectum, Deinde manuum stipulatione Solenniter Adprobatum.
1648 77 pp. Small 4to. 20th-cent. half leather (new endpapers). N. pl., n. pr., (1648). The peace negotiations of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years war, are of the utmost importance in European history. The treaty was concluded on 24th October by Emperor Ferdinand III (1608-1657) with France at Münster, and with Sweden and the German Protestant leaders at Osnabrück. Here present is the text of the Osnabrück negotiations. Representatives of the Empire there were Johann Maximilian Count Lamberg, and Johannes Krane, imperial court counsellor; the Swiss confederacy at the peace congress was represented by Johann Rudolf Wettstein, mayor of Basel. The text of these Osnabrück negotiations depended for its success to a great degree on the satisfaction of the French government. The Westphalian peace became an important part of the German constitution, and the independence of Switzerland from imperial jurisdiction was confirmed. - VD 17 3:657044Y and 23:294480G.
