Houttuyn, (a.o.), 1761-85. 3 in 37 vols.W.together. 296 fine plain engraved plates (all folding) of minerals, quadrupeds, plants, birds, reptiles, etc. Skilfully bound in 20th cloth. bindings with brownred labels. (More or less foxed/browned/spotted throughout, but in good condition with crisp plates). l Extensive Dutch natural history that claims to be based on the 'Systema Naturae' by C. Linnaeus but which is a compilation of similar works in other countries. As Linnaeus, Houttuyn classifies all known plants, animals and minerals, but in contrast to Linnaeus, Houttuyn gives detailed descriptions of each species. Maarten Houttuyn (1720-98) was a doctor and clergyman in Hoorn.
