No foxing present. ; Half leather with five raised bands and a small gilt title stamp on spine,with marble paper covered boards and different marble paper endpapers. Tight solid book with hinges intact. The only illustration is a map facing the title page. On the blank page preceding some faint notes in ink by a previous owner, possibly other titles on the subject. On the facing page is a gift notation. Bound in is what remains of a green silk bookmark. There was no author given in the book as published but a previous owner has pencilled in Coleridge's name on the title page. ; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 328 pages; "In 1825, he accompanied his uncle, William Hart Coleridge, the bishop of Barbados, to the West Indies, and described his excursion in a bright and lively little book, Six Months in the West Indies in 1825, published anonymously in the following year. He wrote therein volubly on emancipation of slaves, which he enumerated at 800,000, and concluded with a declaration of love and devotion upon his return..." (Wikipedia) He was the nephew of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This is a travelogue giving his impressions of each island as they sailed through the islands of the West Indies finished up by a chapter titled 'Planters and Slaves' - a subject that seems to be very much on his mind.. Text block is tight, hinges intact ; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 263 pages; William Lloyd recounts a trip to the West Indies with friends in the form of very detailed letters home. His friends were Thomas Harvey, Joseph Sturge, English Quaker and abolitionist and John Scoble, also an abolitionist. They were especially concerned about the effects of indentured servitude on the slaves in the West Indies. Harvey and Sturge wrote about their own observations in "The West Indies in 1837" which prompted Lloyd to put the letters to his father into book form. Scarce in first edition..
