Born in Finchley, London, Gleed developed an early passion for aviation, learning to fly at the London Aeroplane Club in 1935. He joined the RAF on a short service commission in 1936 and was posted to No. 46 Squadron, flying Gloster Gauntlet biplanes. During the early stages of the war, Gleed served with No. 87 Squadron in France, where he quickly distinguished himself. In May 1940, he achieved ace status by claiming multiple enemy aircraft over just two days. His leadership qualities led to his promotion to Squadron Leader in December 1940, taking command of No. 87 Squadron during the Battle of Britain. Under his command, the squadron played a vital role in defending the UK against German air assaults. In 1942, Gleed authored "Arise to Conquer," a memoir detailing his experiences during the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain. The book provides a vivid account of aerial combat and the challenges faced by RAF pilots during the early years of the war. Promoted to Wing Commander, Gleed later led fighter operations in North Africa. Tragically, on 16 April 1943, he was shot down and killed over Tunisia during a combat mission. His contributions to the war effort were recognized with the Distinguished Service Order and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Gleed's legacy endures as a testament to his bravery and dedication as one of the RAF's notable fighter leaders.. Good+ in Poor dust jacket .
