Fighting Trim at Navy Overseas Freight Terminal
S. l. (San Francisco), Navy Overseas Freight Terminal, 1944. First Edition. First edition presumed, n. d. (ca 1944); 5 1/4 x 4; pp. [30]; beige, mimeographed, stapled wraps; mimeographed illustrations and text to rectos only; a small chip to upper corner of one leaf, else minor wear; in very good or better condition. An unrecorded booklet, it was distributed among the enlisted personnel at the Navy Overseas Freight Terminal in San Francisco and proudly proclaimed: "We count on every man and woman to be ON DUTY every Day. Accidents are sabotage. They wreck equipment, ruin schedules, and injure valued employees. Accidents are comfort to the enemy..this book shows you safe ways to work - to KEEP FIGHTING TRIM." And showing it did, with caricaturish illustrations, how to pay attention to signs, how to work and not horse around, how to realize a mild discomfort is turning into a big deal, and so on. The Navy Overseas Freight Terminal was responsible, among other things, for the sourcing, shipping, and accounting for the vast amount of supplies needed for the war in the Pacific. Very good .

[As told to] Tierney, Frank; [By] Kenney, Captain Roger B.
Asterperious. 319th Heavy Bombardment Squadron in the South-West Pacific Area
Sidney, Angus and Robertson Ltd. 1944. First Edition. First edition; 9 3/4 x 7 1/4; pp. [6], 1-62, [4]; pictorial cloth over boards; a few small, slight worn spots to bottom edge; mild wear to tips of spine; illustrated with numerous photographs; very good condition. A scarce book with a striking cover art, it documented two years of the service of Asterperious - 319th Squadron of the 90th Bombardment Group, the latter known as the Jolly Rogers. One of four squadrons, the 319th was first organized at Key Field in Mississippi in April 1942. It flew out of bases in Australia and New Guinea until VJ Day and after that transported Allied prisoners from Okinawa to Manila, until November 1945, when it ceased operations. The mascot of the 319th - the "Asterperious," was the aboriginal cartoon figure of the cover art, holding a bomb. The members of the group defined the made-up word as a "superior attitude in an inferior environment," or, in other words - "confidence in a seriously mucked-up situation. Very good .

He achieved national fame with his covering of the Lindberg baby kidnapping. In 1936, he had more listeners than any other radio commentator in the country. His commentaries progressively became more controversial - given his fervent criticisms of President Roosevelt and his "New Deal." By 1937, the pressure from the president's allies had caused Carter to lose his job and his sponsorship. When he died of an alleged heart attack in 1944 it was speculated he had been murdered by the leader of a British Israelite Cult. Carter wrote his current book just before the beginning of WWII. In it he argued against the involvement of the US in the conflict in Europe. Homer Bone, to whom the book is inscribed, was a US Senator from Washington and a Federal Judge. Ill.: 0. Very good 2.

Los Gatos Civilian Defense Council
Los Gatos Blackout! Tonight, Wednesday, December 10, 1941
Los Gatos, CA, By the author, 1941. Broadside; 11 x 7 3/4; newsprint, ruled and printed in black; light age-toning and a small cut to bottom edge; faint, intersecting creases; in very good condition. Published and distributed just three days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the broadside began with: "Be on the alert!..This is for your protection..We must have your complete cooperation.." and proceeded to outline the order of signals and the steps needed to be taken during a scheduled blackout. For Los Gatos, a small town in the San Francisco Bay Area, and for every other city on the West Coast the threat of Japanese air raids loomed large. It would prompt rigorously-enforced blackouts, which would be deemed a strategic necessity, rather than an annoying inconvenience. The simple idea was that extinguishing all artifical lights would minimize visibility and would protect civillian and military infrastructure from aerial bombardment. Very good .
