Two folio (9" x 13-3/4") volumes bound in contemporary marbled calf leather with gilt rules and decorated spines and matching gilt-lettered morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers. Illustrated with 2 engraved frontispieces, 20 maps including 8 large folding maps, and 80 full-page copper engravings. A well-illustrated account of travels not often found in this complete state. Occasional marginal notes in ink or pencil, a minor tear here or there but contents very clean. Front board of the first volume detached, others secure. A Near Fine set .

London, G. G. J. and J. Robinson, 1786. Second Edition. Hardcover. Two quarto (8" x 10") volumes bound in later half calf leather and boards with morocco spine labels: xxviii, 368; viii, 356 pages. Translated from the Swedish. Illustrated with a large folding map and 10 plates depicting South African scenes, natives, and geography. Sparrman, botanist and disciple of Linnaeus, traveled early in his adult life as a surgeon on a Royal Swedish East India Company ship to Canton via the Cape of Good Hope. He later accompanied Captain James Cook on his Second Voyage, as assistant to the naturalist Johann Georg Forster, recounted briefly in this work which is primarily an account of his 1775 expedition, considered to be the most trustworthy account of the Cape Colony and the various races of people residing in it to date. He made the first study of the Bushmen. Light, scattered foxing, heaviest to title pages, each of which has the name "Commodore Elliot" in ink at the top; map with some staining and several tears with no loss. Bindings firm but leather rubbed. Very Good .
