Paris, A Laplace, c1852. First edition. Leather. The beautifully illustrated, and very scarce Spanish volume featuring scenes in the nineteenth century. 'L'Espagne' is a very scarce work in the series of 'Album Pittoresque' presented by A Laplace of Paris. The first and only edition of this work. Undated, dated using Worldcat entries for the other works of this series. 'L'Espagne' is one of many works in a series of bound engraved plates issued by A Laplace of Paris. Other works in this series includes 'L'Amerique', 'La Hollande, La Belgique et Le Rhin', 'L'Allemagne' and 'La France&apos. With forty plates total, including eleven that have been beautifully half-coloured. All have been printed on thick paper and are interleaved. The plates to this work are by several illustrators including F Chardon, Ed Willmann and Rouargue. The majority of the plates have been engraved by Rouargue Freres, an important engraver of the mid nineteenth century. A beautiful collection of works depicting Spain. In the publisher's original quarter morocco binding. Externally, smart with rubbing to the head and tail of spine in addition to the raised bands. Small patches of damp staining to the boards. Very scarce. Illustrated with fourteen original postcard photographs of Berlin, which are all presented in black-and-white. This is a lovely personal photographollection, containing snapshots of important topographical landmarks and landscapes from within Berlin, Germany. Some of these photographs seem to have been taken by the prior owner, with a handwritten description accompanying the photos, while others have been purchased.Contents include photographs of the Berlin University, 'Staatsoper', and 'An der National-Galerie&apos. This book is undated, so was dated circa 1930. This is due to the fact that these photographs contain no sight of the Nazi flag which is present in later photographs. Bound in a contemporary cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with minimal edge wear and bumping to the extremities and the head and tail of spine. A few marks to rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Labour Party cabinet member Herbert Morrison was the prime mover; in 1947 he started with the original plan to celebrate the centennial of the Great Exhibition of 1851. However, it was not to be another World Fair, instead, the 1951 festival focused entirely on Britain and its achievements. In the original card wraps. A fascinating and very scarce publication from the Egyptian Government detailing the contract signed on the 4th September 1933 between His Excellency Mohamed Shafik Pasha, Minister of Public Works on behalf of the Egyptian Government, and the contractors - Gibson & Pauling Ltd. - employed to construct the Gebel Aulia Dam on the Sudanese White Nile.The Gebel Aulia Dam, also known as the Jebel Aulia Dam, is located on the White Nile in Sudan, near Khartoum. With construction beginning the year of this contract, 1933, and completing in 1937, when completed it was the largest dam in the world. The dam was built by Gibson and Pauling (Foreign) Ltd, which was a partnership between the British civil engineering company Pauling & Co. and the civil engineer John Watson Gibson.This dam was one of the many undertakings of the Gezira Scheme, one of the world's largest irrigation projects, started by the British while the area was governed as a part of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. It involves water from the Blue Nile being distributed through canals and ditches to tenant farms lying between the Blue and White Nile rivers, for the purposes of growing cotton.Among the many aspects covered by the contract are charts detailing costs of materials and estimated schedules.From the library of Frederic Newhouse (1883-1969), sometime inspector-general of Egyptian irrigation in the Sudan, and with his contemporary inscription to the head of the front wraps, dated 1933.To the front free endpaper is attached by a nail two typed sheets of statistics titled 'Notes on Gebel Aulia Dam (Figures are not final)&apos.
