'L'Espagne' is a very scarce work in the series of 'Album Pittoresque' presented by A Laplace of Paris. The first and only edition of this work. Undated, dated using Worldcat entries for the other works of this series. 'L'Espagne' is one of many works in a series of bound engraved plates issued by A Laplace of Paris. Other works in this series includes 'L'Amerique', 'La Hollande, La Belgique et Le Rhin', 'L'Allemagne' and 'La France&apos. With forty plates total, including eleven that have been beautifully half-coloured. All have been printed on thick paper and are interleaved. The plates to this work are by several illustrators including F Chardon, Ed Willmann and Rouargue. The majority of the plates have been engraved by Rouargue Freres, an important engraver of the mid nineteenth century. A beautiful collection of works depicting Spain. A fascinating and very scarce publication from the Egyptian Government detailing the contract signed on the 4th September 1933 between His Excellency Mohamed Shafik Pasha, Minister of Public Works on behalf of the Egyptian Government, and the contractors - Gibson & Pauling Ltd. - employed to construct the Gebel Aulia Dam on the Sudanese White Nile.The Gebel Aulia Dam, also known as the Jebel Aulia Dam, is located on the White Nile in Sudan, near Khartoum. With construction beginning the year of this contract, 1933, and completing in 1937, when completed it was the largest dam in the world. The dam was built by Gibson and Pauling (Foreign) Ltd, which was a partnership between the British civil engineering company Pauling & Co. and the civil engineer John Watson Gibson.This dam was one of the many undertakings of the Gezira Scheme, one of the world's largest irrigation projects, started by the British while the area was governed as a part of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan.
