Blixen, Karen
Out of Africa
Century Publishing, London, 1986. Reprint, Hardcover (Original Cloth), Illustrated by: Bina Dhanani. Near Fine Condition/No Dust Jacket. Brown cloth covers with decoration in white & black plus coloured photo. of author to front. ‘Out of Africa’ is probably the finest book ever written about the nature of the African continent and its people- although at first sight it is not about either of these things. Karen Blixen set out in middle age to record the central experience of her life, in which with her husband she went out to Kenya to manage a coffee plantation close to the Ngong Hills near Nairobi, and continued to do so by herself for ten years after her divorce. What she achieved, however, went far beyond this. ‘Out of Africa’ is a uniquely poignant evocation of a vanishing land and its peoples, whose destiny seems to echo the author's own pre-occupations but remains eternally distinct from them. This superbly illustrated edition brings alive the Kenya of those years: the day-to-day events on a struggling farm, the often eccentric European settlers, the African peoples among whom they lived and, above all, the magnificent, wild land in which the story is set. Dramatic paintings of the landscape, haunting contemporary photographs, and the numerous decorative illustrations by the Kenyan artist Bina Dhanani combine in harmony with the text of Karen Blixen's masterpiece. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 288 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Black titles spine. illustrated by African drawings in black, white & brown with reproductions of colour paintings, further drawings in colour & b/w. photo's.. Illustrator: Bina Dhanani. Harrer, Heinrich, Seven Years in Tibet
Harrer, Heinrich
Seven Years in Tibet
Pan Books Ltd. London, 1956. First Paperback Edition, Softcover. Very Good Condition/N/A.. ‘Seven Years in Tibet’ has been described as 'the greatest travel book of our time'. Yet even this commendation does not do justice to the unique experiences which it unfolds. No European has ever before penetrated into that inaccessible land in such strange circumstances, or has succeeded in staying there so long. Heinrich Harrer, well-known Austrian mountaineer and Olympic ski-ing champion, was climbing in the Himalayas when caught by the outbreak of war, and was interned by the British in India. With a companion, he escaped at. his third attempt and crossed the Himalayas into Tibet. After many desolate marches and strange adventures, they reached the Forbidden City of Lhasa , where they were eventually allowed to remain and earn a living. They found the traditional insularity of Tibet leavened with a new appetite for Western knowledge and ideas. Their fame quickly spread: Soon they were in great demand as advisers on many subjects of which they themselves knew little .. The day came when Harrer was presented to the young Dalai Lama, the god-king; he became the boy's friend and tutor and was permitted a degree of intimacy which awed the people and worried the religious hierarchy, After the War's end, Harrer stayed on, but when the. Communist Chinese invaded Tibet he accompanied the Dalai Lama in flight to India, and then returned sadly to Europe. His remarkable account of his experiences is illustrated with a number of his fine photographs. A film of this book has been made by Seven League Productions, with Harrer himself playing the chief part. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 267 pages.
