VG.** "After the 1870–71 Franco-Prussian War, Alsace was annexed by Germany and became a part of the 1871 unified German Empire as a formal "Emperor's Land". After World War I the victorious Allies detached it from Germany and the province became part of the Third French Republic. (After having been occupied and annexed by Germany during World War II, it was returned to France by the Allies at the end of World War II.)" (wiki).
