An exceptionally scarce prospectus for the construction of the Severn Tunnel and Railway, a monumental undertaking which came to fruition in 1886 and still runs to this day. Very scarce. Dated from an ink inscription to the front panel, '1869&apos. This coincides with the years preceding the construction of the Severn Tunnel, when discussions were taking place. A prospectus surrounding the construction of the Severn Tunnel and Railway, with a branch link to the Bristol Channel docks at Kingroad. This prospectus outlines the aims of this railway, highlighting the improved communication between the South West and Bristol, and South Wales and the West and South of England. The total expected passengers and projected costs are also discussed. With two handwritten annotations, altering the text, thought to have been the work of the chief consulting engineer, John Hawkshaw. One of these corrections replaces the number of passengers per year, with 36,000 swapped for 360,000. Disbound, as issued. Pages are bright, with some light handling marks. A few ink annotations. Apted, dated 30th November 1887.This report discusses the consumption of fuel by the pumping stations in Sudbrook, used in the construction and running of the Severn Tunnel. The large pumping station was built to pump water from the tunnel.The Severn Tunnel was opened by Great Western Railway in 1886. They begun work on the tunnel, which measures 7,008 meters long, in 1873, to link South Gloucestershire to Monmouthshire, and remained the longest underwater tunnel in the world for a century. Unbound, as issued, leaves attached to one another by a pin to the head. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with handling marks and scattered spots.
