Campbell visited and inspected the string of missions established in South Africa by the London Missionary Society. Over a period of 17 months from his arrival in 1812 he recorded much of interest outside of the missionary field. His route took him to the Moravian missions at Groenekloof & Genadendal, thereafter to Bethelsdorp. He crossed the Orange River to Griquatown and other mission stations for the half-caste Hottentots where he had meetings with the Hottentot chiefs. Then he traveled further north to Kuruman, following up with his journey westwards through the desert parallel to the Orange River and finally south along the coast back to Cape Town.
