Stonehenge," "Forest," Etc. (Pseud. for Walsh, Henry John; Wood, John George)
The Handbook of Manly Exercises; Containing Boxing, Walking, Running, Leaping, Vaulting, Etc. , with Chapters on Training for Pedestrianism and Other Purposes
London, George Routledge & Sons, 1865. Early edition (possibly second printing, ca 1865) ; 5 1/2 x 3 1/2; pp. [3], iv-vi, [1], 8-64; engraved orange paper over boards; illustrated with three engravings; a bit of rubbing to spine with small loss of paper; some wear to corners and fore-edge of last leaf; in good to very good condition. A surprisingly-scarce publication, it was written by British sports writer John Henry Walsh, aka "Stonehenge" (1810 - 1888) and John George Wood (1827 - 1889), mostly known for his natural history works. Of the exercises discussed in the book, arguably the most amusing one was pedestrianism, a form of competitive walking and precursor to the modern racewalking, called by BBC: "a strange sport of epic rivalries, eyewatering salaries, feverish nationalism, eccentric personalities, and six-day, 450-mile walks. Very good .
