Inspired by Eugène Delacroix’s 1834 painting of the same name, the book explores the lives of Algerian women across different historical periods—pre-colonial, colonial, and post-independence Algeria. The collection comprises six stories and a theoretical postface. The "Today" section portrays urban women in 1970s Algiers navigating the challenges of modernity and tradition. The "Yesterday" section delves into the past, depicting women during the colonial era and their struggles with societal constraints. Djebar's narratives address themes such as the compartmentalization of women, the implications of reticence, the connection of language to oppression, and the impact of war on both women and men . The book was well-received upon its release, selling out its first printing in France and gaining popularity in Italy. It was later translated into English by Marjolijn de Jager and Clarisse Zimra, with the English edition published in 1992. The translation was recognized by the American Literary Translators Association as an Outstanding Translation of the Year . Women of Algiers in Their Apartment is celebrated for its lyrical and innovative storytelling, offering a poignant critique of the political and social realities faced by Algerian women..
