A cruiser of the United States Navy named to honour the Australian cruiser HMAS Canberra sunk during the Battle of Savo Island. The first USN warship named after a foreign capital city. Illustrated throughout with photographs of the crew and illustrations of kangaroos. A ship tune, 'sail on, Canberra', sung to the tune of Waltzing Matilda. Charles Ladds (1903-1971) was an Australian writer who ran away to sea at the age of fourteen, and at the ripe old age of twenty-two wrote this story of his adventures, fist published in 1934. It earned praise from the critics, including G. K. Chesterton. He later lived at Burleigh Heads. Very minor discolouration to cloth. Head and tail of spine lightly pushed. A paper on early steam boats in Australia by Alexander Brown Portus (1834-1905), late Superintending Engineer of Dredges for the Public Works Department of New South Wales, read before the Australian Historical Society, 30th June, 1904. Describes the ships, their arrivals, movements, events, repairs, wrecks, and other historical minutiae, largely in New South Wales, but also of their movement and events in Victoria, Tasmania, Queensland, and New Zealand. The jacket is worn and split at the spine crown and with a stain to the spine. Very minor foxing to edges. The interior is bright with only minor pencil annotations. Shipped Weight: .18 kilos.
