Owned by Allan Wells, The Classic Cat on the Sunset Strip was an icon of Los Angeles' strip club scene operating from the mid 1960s to the late 1970s at 8844 Sunset Boulevard. A new restaurant by the same name opened in the building next door in the 2000s and still operates today. The magazine features many of the club's "kittens" on and off stage, as well as celebrity patrons of the club. Rare, unrecorded in OCLC. Very minor shelf and handling wear. First edition, first printing of one of the masterpieces of early 20th century erotica, noted as being the most expensive clandestine publication of the time with 46 finely printed and hand coloured illustrations by Jean Dulac. The story by Marcel Valotaire tells of the sexual awakening of a young female student, Nelly, mostly in the hands of her Latin tutor, Jean. One of 240 numbered copies on Arches (from a total edition of 295). The 2 volumes here bound as one in a fine three quarter leather binding retaining the two original illustrated wrapper panels. Rare clandestine erotic fiction in English published circa 1920-1924. Four stories translated from the French by the author The Way of a Man with a Maid. "The first story in this collection is an English translation of 'La Maison a Laisirs ou La passion de Gilberte' (1889) ... The final three stories are translated from 'Les Heures Erotiques Modernes' c. 1894... The stories were possibly the work of Adolphe Belot, a popular French novelist of the 1880s. I believe the MS of this translation.. were probably left unpublished by Carrington (who had published the same author's Way of a Man with a Maid, and were sold with the rest of his stock at the Hotel Drouot in 1923. Since most of the stock was bought by Groves and Michaux, his partners and successors, they were probably responsible for getting them printed by Duflou, though it is equally possible that Hirsch, who also bought some Carrington material in 1923, got hold of these and arranged for their printing."
