Naked man with cymbals and scabellum
A nude standing male figure (possibly a satyr) holding a cymbal in each hand, and his left foot on a scabellum (a type of foot-operated wooden clapper instrument). This print is number 1 from the series 'Signorum Veterum Icones (I)', a selection of classical statues from the collection of Gerard Reynst (1599-1658). Etching on hand laid paper, sheet size 108 x 224 mm., platemark 107 x 223 mm., etching by Jan de Bisschop (1628-1671), after an anonymous statue. Published ca. 1668-69. In good condition, cropped to the platemark, attached to carrier. Right edge faintly foxed and a little discoloured. References: Hollstein Dutch 4; Gelder & Jost 1.
